Twickenham RC report on their recent success

Three Twickenham crews rowed to victory on Saturday 1st November in the Teddington Small Boats Head. In division one, the S4 4+ stroked by Steve Bowers powered to victory in a time of 18m53s beating Kingston RC and Vesta RC, impressively coming in only 31 seconds behind their S2 counterparts!

The men’s veteran quad, stroked by Rob Bailey also came first in their category in a time of 17m39s, fighting off stiff competition from Vesta, Bewl Bridge and Kingston. The S2 4+ stroked by Jonno Davidson came fourth in their category in 18m22s. The women’s S3 4+ stroked by Vicky Owen, came third out of five in a time of 21m19s, after overtaking one Kingston crew and familiar faces Auriol Kensington during the 4800m course and catching Walbrook to finish just one second behind them.

In division two the weather took a turn for the worse and all crews had to fight treacherous conditions to get from start to finish in one piece. The women’s S4 4+ crew stroked by Vicky Owen were victorious, beating both Kingston and Walbrook, despite a mid race crash.

Once past Ravens Ait, it was straight into the head wind and waves coming above the riggers in the toughest conditions this crew had ever seen. In the men’s S3 4+ category, boat 1 stroked by Steve Bowers finished third out of five and boat 2, stroked by rookie stroke James Frater came in fourth.

Twickenham also boasted a number of single scull entries too. In the men’s S4 category, Vince Russell made his debut in a single scull head race, finishing the course in a very respectable 23m41s. Charlotte Holloway and Sam Grant flew the flag for the women in the novice category, finishing second and third respectively. In division two, Jake Nelson came third out of five in the men’s S3 category, finishing the course in 23m7s.

This was a great start to the season for Twickenham Rowing Club. Director of Rowing and senior squad coach Gerry Elphicke commented "This was an excellent start for the senior squad pulling in some very respectable times and gives us a lot to build on for the season, starting next week when we enter the Fours Head of the River. Twickenham RC has a great diversity of age and ability of rower as demonstrated by the entries we had this weekend."
