Quick Facts

How much will it cost?

£210

How long is the award?

20 hours of face-to-face tutoring including assessment.

Session Coach is endorsed by 1st4Sport qualifications and concentrates on helping you develop rowers through skills based sessions, and replaces the ‘Learn to Row Instructor’. As part of the national qualification framework the UKCC qualification provides learners with an opportunity to take their first step onto a formal qualification pathway. The course aims to train and support our coaches to the best possible standard whilst developing their coaching skills and providing them with a range of tools that they can take back to their clubs.

What will I get out of it?

As a Session Coach Award holder you will be able to plan, deliver and review stand-alone rowing sessions and you will be qualified to work independently, but you may be part of a larger coaching team delivering a session as part of a programme written by someone else.

Who can attend?

Anyone over 18 years of age inspired to develop their coaching skills.

In addition to this you must be:

  • A British Rowing registered member. Non-members can apply online for instant registration (England and Wales); or
  • A current Scottish Rowing member, a current member of a Scottish Rowing club, and resident in Scotland (Scotland only).

How is the course structured?

It focuses on developing three areas

  1. Managing risk;
  2. Planning for activity and fitness; and
  3. Skill development.

The course is underpinned by coaching behaviours and communication.

How do I apply?

Step 1

Complete the two prerequisite courses online available free of charge on RowHow:

Safety Basics

Cold Water & Hypothermia

Don’t forget to print off and keep your certificates for your portfolio!

Step 2

Register on a Session Coach course. Check the calendar to find one near you.

Session Coach includes both theory and practical learning, with a focus on delivering skills based sessions.

After completing 20 hours of face-to-face learning you are then encouraged to practise your coaching skills back at your club or centre.

An assessment of your coaching will take place on the final day of the face-to-face learning, and will include an observation by an Assessor. Feedback by the Assessor will be provided and an agreed action plan put in place to assist you to continually develop as a coach.
