How much will it cost?

£249

How long is the award?

20 hours of face-to-face tutoring including assessment.

As a Session Coach Award holder you will be able to plan, deliver and review stand-alone rowing sessions and you will be qualified to work independently, but you may be part of a larger coaching team delivering a session as part of a programme written by someone else.

Who can attend?

Anyone over 18 years of age inspired to develop their coaching skills, some courses are also open to 16-17 year olds, this will be outlined in the details of each course.

In addition to this you must be a British Rowing member. Non-members can apply online for instant registration

How is the course structured?

It focuses on developing three areas

  1. Safety
  2. Session planning
  3. Skill development

The course is underpinned by coaching behaviours and communication.

How do I apply?

Step 1

Complete the two prerequisite courses online available free of charge on RowHow:

Safety Basics

Cold Water and Hypothermia

Don’t forget to print off and keep your certificates for your portfolio!

Step 2

Register on a Session Coach course. Check the calendar to find one near you.

Session Coach includes both theory and practical learning, with a focus on delivering skills based sessions.

After completing 2 days of face-to-face learning, you are then encouraged to practise your coaching skills back at your club or centre.

An assessment of your coaching will take place on the third day of the face-to-face learning, and will include an observation by an Assessor. Feedback by the Assessor will be provided and an agreed action plan put in place to assist you to continually develop as a coach.

You will be provided with a Learner Portfolio that contains all the information and templates that you will need, as well as:

  • The British Rowing Learn to Row Handbook
  • Code of Practice for Sports Coaches (UK Coaching)
  • Technique and Confidence Activity Cards

Where can I find funding?

You may be able to secure funding through UK Coaching or your Regional Rowing Council.
