RowWise: Raising standards and improving experiences in rowing
British Rowing has launched a series of learning modules designed to equip the rowing community with the knowledge to keep our sport welcoming and safe
Rowing is a sport where everyone should feel safe, valued and heard.
British Rowing expects all members, participants and volunteers to adhere to the highest standards of conduct. This involves actively contributing to a safe and inclusive environment by treating everyone with courtesy and respect. To achieve this, we are introducing a series of free learning modules titled RowWise.
RowWise is designed to give everyone who has a touchpoint with our sport the knowledge they need to abide by the standards expected of them in an easy-to-follow way. This work forms part of our ongoing goal to work in collaboration with the community to raise standards and improve experiences of our sport.
What is ‘RowWise’?
RowWise is a series of new learning modules designed to establish clear standards and foundational knowledge for everyone involved in our sport, including rowers, coxes, coaches, umpires, committee members and volunteers.
The modules set out what participants should expect from others, and what is expected of them, across key areas of the sport. From what to wear on the water to how to properly report a concern, RowWise has been designed to aid everyone in the community in setting the tone for how those in our sport should behave.
Which modules are being launched?
The first round of modules offer foundational knowledge about what to expect when becoming a part of the rowing community.
These modules are:
- Ready to Row
- Member Behaviour
- Understanding your Club
- Complaints or Concerns at your Club
- Escalating a Concern or Complaint to British Rowing
- Holding a Committee Position
What are the next steps?
British Rowing are encouraging every member of the rowing community to complete these foundational modules. The modules clear up reporting processes, how to escalate concerns, what is expected of committee members and more. Establishing these shared standards will help ensure that rowing is safe, inclusive and enjoyable for all.
