The Clean Water Sports Alliance will be holding a parliamentary drop-in on Tuesday 24 February from 11:00 to 13:00 in Room O, Portcullis House. The session will look ahead to the Water Reform Bill and the key issues the White Paper raises for recreational water users and public health.

The Alliance, which brings together 11 water sport national governing bodies representing hundreds of thousands of participants, wants to ensure that the interests of recreational water users are clearly understood by Parliament as the Bill takes shape.

The Clean Water Sports Alliance, of which British Rowing is a founding member, is calling on the Government to use the forthcoming Transition Plan and Water Reform Bill to lock in clear public health duties and stronger protections for recreational water users. This includes properly resourced regulation, real time data transparency, and tougher controls on wastewater and agricultural pollution to reduce risks from sewage and other contaminants.

Rachel Dulai, British Rowing’s Sustainability Lead, said: “We urge all clubs to contact their local MPs to encourage them to attend the Clean Water Sports Alliance drop in session on 24 February. Together we have a voice, and this is amplified even more through our alliance with the other water sports. It is essential that recreational water users speak together and do all we can to ensure that vital public health protections are made explicit in law.”

British Rowing believes that this session is a key opportunity for clubs and members to influence decision makers on the protections that matter most to people who use rivers, lakes and coasts for sport and recreation.
