Durham University BC send new year’s message

The 2026 racing season is open for business in the North East and Durham University BC were first through the door to cash their well earned cheques from a winter training camp in Banyoles.

At Saturday’s Tyne United New Year’s Head, the palatinate tide rolled into Newburn and left with plenty of the top honours. Across the two divisions the students won eight events, with their Men’s 1st Eight and top Coxless Four posting the fastest times in the first and second division, respectively. Not to be outdone, their women’s squad won their Quadruple Sculls event, were the fastest Women’s Eight, and Molly Curry won the Women’s Single Scull.

Speaking after racing, Lead Coach Holly Young said, “The squad delivered a strong collective performance over the weekend, with every athlete rising to the challenge despite tough racing conditions. Competing on the Tyne provided a valuable opportunity to rehearse the BUCS Head course and test ourselves in a demanding environment, offering plenty of useful takeaways as we move forward. Our recent training camp has also proven hugely beneficial, supporting crew development both technically and physically.

“Being able to train consistently on the water over the New Year period has been a real asset, and we’ve seen clear progress across all areas – on the water, on the ergo, and in strength and conditioning. With several strong results already this season, the coaching team are excited by the direction of travel. As we continue to build momentum, we’re looking forward to seeing what this squad can achieve over the next block of training and racing.”

The famous 4500m course produced 19 different winning clubs or composites and there was a huge amount of success for locals Tyne ARC and hosts Tyne United RC. The always strong Masters from the north side of the river picked up wins in the Women’s Masters C/D/E Eight which went nicely with their win in the Open Masters C/D Eight and Women’s Masters E/F/G Quadruple Scull in the second division. Their neighbours also fielded a cracking contingent of masters. Tyne United RC won the Women’s Masters C/D Quadruple Sculls, the Open Masters E/F/G Quadruple Sculls to go with both the Band 1 and Band 2 titles in the Open J16 Quadruple Sculls.

As is always the case, the rest of the region was well represented on the Tyne. Cambois RC picked up seven wins, including storming to victory in Band 1and 2 Open J18 Double Sculls, the Open Junior Single Scull, and the Band 2 Women’s Junior Single Scull.

Such was the depth of competition that both the Open and Women’s Eights had four bands of competition. The Open event saw a kaleidoscope of colour motor to victory as a magnificent seven clubs came together to race. The crew, featuring BRIC record holder Aidan Leverage, won their event by nearly 28 seconds ahead of Lambton RC. York City RC won the Women’s event, one of three wins for them which also included the Open Single Scull and the Women’s J18 Double Scull.
