With just over three weeks to go until the British Rowing Club Championships, entry numbers are significantly ahead of last year’s final numbers. Over 1,000 entries have already been submitted, and spaces at the event are filling up quickly.

Entries for this year’s Club Championships must be submitted by 13:00 on Tuesday, 8 July. Just like the Masters Championships, the Organising Committee reserves the right to close early. Whilst your mind may be on Henley crews, now is the perfect time to submit your entries and keep racing throughout the summer.

As crews ride the Henley Women’s Regatta high and get ready for Henley Royal Regatta, the lull between the two events presents the ideal opportunity to ensure summer admin and entries are sorted ahead of four days of racing the Club Championships.

It should also be noted that clubs must ensure that their entries have all been paid before the deadline in just under two weeks.

One crew which will bring together athletes from HWR and HRR will be the Thames RC Mixed Eight. They are set to return to defend their title, something Rosa Millard is particularly excited to do.

Speaking on The End of The Island Podcast, the British Champion and Boat Race Winner said: “I’m so pleased to say I’m British Champion in the Mixed Eight. It was so much fun.

“It was the most fun racing I have ever done, so good. We basically decided our crew on Henley Sunday after a vigorous selection battle and I’m not quite sure how the seat lineup came about,” she said with a laugh.

“I suppose it makes sense to put the stronger people, and the men might not necessarily be the stronger people, in the middle and the more technical athletes in the bows and stern. We want to break six minutes in the Mixed Eights at Brit Champs.”

Last year’s champions of the WJ18 8+ as well as Victor Ludorum winners Wallingford Rowing Club were involved in one of the races of the regatta last weekend. Having been led by Latymer Upper for the majority of their quarter-final of the Peabody Cup, Wallingford finally overhauled their opposition after three hard-fought pushes to win by a quarter of a length in a phenomenal encounter.

This was just one of the races that the all-star commentary team picked out as a highlight. Olympic bronze medallist Becky Wilde was naturally very impressed with the sculling.

“My favourite race was the Championship Quads. Reading University BC gave a masterclass in crew boat sculling and showed their dominance on the domestic scene. All four of those girls are ones to look out for in the future and massive credit goes to Coach Chris Bartley. I think it’s just the start of more success to come for the Reading programme,” explained Becky.

Olympic silver medallist Eve Stewart was also part of the commentary team and covered much of the racing across the final day of action at HWR.

“The Championship Eights Final was fantastic. I’ve obviously got a bit of a soft spot for the eight and I think it was so ferocious. Going stroke for stroke making such statements of intent, there’s just nothing like it. At the end of the day, it’s what you train for all year, to get stuck into racing like that and hopefully end up on the right side of it.”

Thames RC was just edged out by a third of a length, beaten by the Leander Club/Durham University BC/ University of London BC composite. However, this crew, and their other boats that won the Lester Trophy and the Copas Cup, featured athletes who won Women’s Championship Coxless Fours at the British Championships last summer.

With the British Club Championships set to be a thrilling crescendo to many seasons, don’t delay in getting your entry in.
