Great Britain announce squad for World U23 Rowing Championships

The GB Rowing Team has announced a 50-strong squad of up and coming rowers that will travel to Varese, Italy, for the World Under-23 Rowing Championships taking place there from July 23-27.

The 50 rowers will compete across 13 boat categories and the Championships will provide them with a chance to impress on the world stage and to follow in the footsteps of a number of former GB winners who are now permanent fixtures in the senior squad.

Jess Leyden of Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, racing the single scull in Italy, is one of the most promising young rowers in the squad having won Britain’s first ever open weight women’s single scull gold at last year’s Junior World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.

The 19-year old also performed well at the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials at the start of the season, making it to the ‘A’ Final where she raced against the likes of Olympians Victoria Thornley, Frances Houghton and Beth Rodford.

Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne of Gloucester Hartpury RC is another who competed at the GB Senior Team Trials where she came third in the ‘B’ Final of the women’s single sculls. Hodgkins-Byrne will race in the women’s quadruple scull alongside Holly Nixon, Jo Wratten and Lucy Burgess.

Angus Groom and Jack Beaumont are two young men to watch out for in the men’s squad. They have already reached for the senior GB squad this year as the second-ranked open double scull at the Aiguebelette World Cup.

Beaumont, who is from Maidenhead, also performed strongly at the GB Trials earlier this year finishing 5th in the ‘A’ Final. He raced at the last two U23 World Championships and also won a gold medal in the single scull, a silver in the quadruple scull and a bronze in the men’s eight at last year’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney. Beaumont was inspired to take up the sport by his father, Peter, who competed for GB at the 1988 Olympic Games.

Groom has also competed at the last two U23 World Championships and finished 2nd in the ‘B’ Final of the Senior Team Trials. The 22-year old had a successful season last year, winning all three championship sculling events at the 2013 BUCS Regatta. He was awarded ‘Team Durham’s Sportsman of the Year 2013’.

Groom and Beaumont are amongst a number of rowers in the squad who competed at last year’s U23 World Championships in Linz, Austria. Fiona Gammond, Nicole Lamb and cox Morgan Baynham-Williams have all been selected to race in the women’s eight for the second successive year and Jo Wratten, who raced in the eight last year, will race in the women’s quad in Varese. All four won silver medals racing in the eight in Linz.

Callum McBrierty is in the coxed four, as he was last year and Lewis McCue, who was in McBrierty’s boat last year, will now race in the men’s four. George Rossiter and Jamie Cook who were in the eight for Linz will now race with McCue in the four, along with James Rudkin.

In the lightweights, Gemma Hall and Ellie Lewis retain their places in the women’s quad, which won a bronze medal last year. Emily Craig, who raced in that quad will now race in the lightweight single sculls.

Wilf Kimberley will again race in the lightweight men’s pair having won a silver medal in Linz. Kimberley’s partner will be Charles Waite-Roberts, who has been moved from the lightweight four of 2013. Waite-Roberts, Tim Richards and Joel Cassells won a silver medal in the four last year and Richards and Cassells will remain in this boat.

The squad also contains numerous young athletes who are being developed through GB Rowing Team’s High Performance Programmes in Clubs at Oxford Brookes University BC, Newcastle University BC and Leander Club.

James Rudkin and Tom Ford were both members of the Newcastle University ‘A’ crew which won the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Ed Grisedale, Jamie Copus, Tim Grant and Joel Cassells all raced in the Oxford Brookes University ‘A’ crew which won the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley and the Leander men’s quad of Beaumont, Groom, Seb Devereux and Sholto Carnegie who won the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup are all in the squad for Varese – while Beaumont and Groom will be in the double together, Carnegie and Devereux will race in the quad again.
