Lake Banyoles is set to welcome the world for the 2025 edition of the World Rowing Masters Regatta. This year’s competition will feature more than 3,700 rowers from across the globe, and Great Britain leads the way, sending the largest contingent of athletes.

Aberdeen BC leads the British entries with 101 boats set to race, followed by Marlow RC and Upper Thames RC with 79 and 77 entries respectively. More than 5,395 boats are entered across the regatta, with around 680 races scheduled. A full spectrum of competitors will be out in force, with participants ranging in age from 27 to 96. This year, the oldest rower will be making the trip across the Atlantic Ocean from Brazil.

This phenomenal entry from British clubs speaks volumes to the growth of Masters rowing across the country. Earlier this year, the Masters community came together for the largest ever British Rowing Masters Championships and beginning next year, Henley Masters Regatta will have an additional day of racing. Plenty of the crews who have been competing across the country will be in action across in Spain, flying the flag for Masters rowing in the UK.

Spain will be well represented at their home regatta as over 400 athletes from across the country will travel to Catalonia and the lake that hosted rowing at the 1992 Olympics. Large contingents will also travel from France and Germany, while around 300 athletes will represent clubs across the United States of America. Australia, Brazil, and Japan will also travel well, with 142, 104, and 75 entries each, respectively.

The final day of the regatta, 14 September, will once again be dedicated to mixed racing. Crews can still be entered until 12 September, giving athletes one last chance to join the regatta.

Gary Bain, member of the World Rowing Masters Commission and stalwart of Aberdeen BC said, “The 2025 edition of the WRMR is shaping up to be a wonderful event, with the Banyoles Organising Committee working hard to provide a fantastic experience, both on and off the water, for competitors.”

He continued, “As the rowing venue for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, invoking memories of the Searle brothers last gasp victory over the Abbagnales in the Men’s Coxed Pairs final, Lake Banyoles is sure to provide wonderful racing memories for all our athletes.

“I am particularly pleased to see such a large contingent of rowers travelling over from Great Britain to compete. Having been involved at all the WRMRs since 2011, I can’t recall GB making up such a large proportion of the overall entries. Having over 100 British clubs represented is a testament to the current strength and depth of British Masters rowing.

“Being completely biased, I am particularly proud that my home club, Aberdeen BC, is the largest British club, by crew entry, with 52 of our members racing. Good luck to all British crews racing at Banyoles, and I look forward to seeing many of you on the victory pontoon and/or enjoying a well-earned post-race cerveza!!”

The World Rowing Masters Regatta takes place in Banyoles Spain 10 -14 September 2025. The startlists for the event are now available on World Rowing’s website.
