PlasticBlitz

June got off to a flying start as British Rowing staff (and new interim CEO!) joined Fulham Reach BC on a plastic clear up of the foreshore in Hammersmith. Read about it here. It was great to actively do something as part of the Thames 21 initiative but also shocking to see how many plastic shards of beer cups and plastic bottle tops there were in the river.  Lots of work to be done with the hospitality trade, we’re anticipating.  This is part of the point of the nationwide campaign as data is collected – to see where to target campaigning/efforts. At British Rowing, this forms part of our work relating to objective no.1 of our strategy – to Help our Waters Thrive.

Our final PlasticBlitz took place at the Masters Championships on Sunday at 2pm. It was great to see such a strong turnout, and a huge thank you to the clubs who signed up to the scheme over the period.

Making Space for Water

The Rivers Trust, one of our partners has launched a campaign called ‘Making Space for Water’.  This is a collaboration with The National Trust, The Beaver Trust and Woodland Trust.

As Imogen Grant says: “Nature knows how to look after itself if we let it! The Making Space for Water campaign will return diversity and beauty to a whole swath of rivers in the UK, and prevent species loss and future floods.”

More details about the campaign can be found here.

What can you do?
  • Sign the MS4W petition HERE, there’s also an option to ‘Send a Postcard’ to your MP.
  • Sign YOUR school/university/club up in support of MS4W HERE
  • Watch this beautiful Space for Water video from Beaver Trust below. Ideal for anyone involved in public outreach, especially schools. It would be a rather nice starter asset for many river based/water sessions.\

Henley Women’s Regatta

Henley Women’s Regatta will have an ‘eco area’ this year – do come and visit. They are also being supported by our partners Delphis. Don’t forget the 10% discount on eco-friendly cleaning products that we get with the code CLEANRIVERS.
