Last Sunday at BUCS Regatta, tragedy struck Bath Spa University Rowing Club.

As their boat crossed the finish line in the time trials, the father of Bath Spa rower Joe suffered a sudden heart attack. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly could not be saved.

His passing shook the crew, the club, and everyone who witnessed the heartbreak unfold. But in the face of this unimaginable loss, Joe did something that left the club speechless:

He returned to row.

He got back in the boat with his crew – not just as an athlete, but as a symbol of resilience, courage, and love.

Now, Bath Spa Rowing Club is rowing for Joe.

“In the face of heartbreak, what shone through was the unwavering strength, unity, and spirit of our crew.” – Bath Spa University Rowing Club

From 14-15 May, the club will be hosting a 24-hour rowing challenge on Bath Spa University campus. They plan on taking shifts on the erg, livestreaming the event, and opening it to the public – all to raise funds in support of Joe’s future in rowing.

The club wants to honour Joe’s father’s memory by helping Joe continue his love for our sport with access to coaching, equipment, and the opportunity to race again at BUCS in a boat that reflects the strength of his story.

Over 10,000 were touched to read Joe’s story on Instagram. If you have been touched by the story, please consider donating and supporting the club’s fundraising efforts.

In a true show of the loyalty that lies within our sport, the University of Warwick Boat Club has pledged to do their own rowathon in tandem with Bath Spa University, on their campus 100 miles away.

The club’s ultimate goal is to remind Joe, and the world, what rowing family means.
