Derwentwater - waiting for the rowers

The British Rowing Tour will be rowing in the northern Lake District from Thursday 29 August to Sunday 1 September, taking in the beautiful lakes of Ullswater, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. It is a great opportunity to explore this part of the Lake District while also enjoying the camaraderie of the tour.

This year there is a new tour format with participants split into three different groups and boats based at three locations. Each group will visit the three lakes in daily rotation with Ullswater being the longest day covering 24km in a round trip and Derwentwater the shortest at 10km. There will be additional activities offered to provide a full daily programme.

British Rowing organiser Peter Barker said: “This year’s tour is again with the help of Lakeland Rowing Club, who have developed greatly, and the Northern group are now based on Derwentwater.

John Turnbull, Chairman of the Rec Rowing Committee, added: “Everyone had a great time on the previous tour to Windermere and Coniston in the Lake District, enjoying the fantastic scenery with the occasional wet and windy conditions providing a bit of challenge!”

He added: “If the new format is successful it can be used at other venues in the future so enabling a three-day tour format where normally only single days are possible.”

Thanks to two equipment packages of four stable quadruple sculls boats provided by British Rowing partner Charles Stanley Wealth Managers, there will be 40 seats available so if you don’t have access to a seat in a boat you can hire one. In the event of needing more than 40 seats for hire, clubs with their own stable boats will be asked to offer extra seats.

Activities off the water too include something for all interests from a tour of the Keswick Brewing Company through to the treasures of Keswick Museum and Art Gallery, walks with panoramic fell views and also historic houses such as Mirehouse, built by another Charles Stanley in 1666.
