All you need to know about… SUPPORT membership
British Rowing membership is changing. Find out more about our new SUPPORT membership below.
British Rowing SUPPORT membership is for those key people in our sport, without whom rowing as we know it simply wouldn’t exist. From umpires to event organisers and to club coaches, administrators and committee members, they make rowing happen.
SUPPORT is one of four new membership types – RACE, ROW, COACH and SUPPORT – that replace the current Silver, Gold and Platinum categories.
These changes will be the first in a number of improvements to British Rowing membership, aimed at better recognising and rewarding the key roles within our sport, creating a foundation on which to further expand our membership offer, and making it more relevant to you, our members.
It’s the result of a wide-ranging consultation with the rowing community, including our biggest ever survey of British Rowing members, interviews with a cross-section of current and former members, and discussions with British Rowing’s Regional Chairmen, standing committees and Board.
To outline what SUPPORT member provides and who it’s for, we’ve put together the answers to some common questions below. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Email us at email@example.com.
The move to the new membership framework is due to take place on Tuesday, 20 November, when our new online member management goes live. Keep an eye on your inbox over the next week for important updates about your membership.
SUPPORT membership – your questions answered.
Who is SUPPORT membership for?
Our SUPPORT membership is for the key people in our sport. Whether you’re an umpire, volunteer coach, event organiser or club committee member, you support the sport and your British Rowing membership is here to recognise that contribution.
What are the key benefits?
As a SUPPORT member, you’ll get access to specific training courses and workshops to support your role in the sport. You’ll learn new skills and meet new people along the way, benefiting you and your club.
You’ll be able to stay connected to the community and hear about senior volunteer roles available at British Rowing from our competitions through to our committees. You will also get exclusive behind-the-scenes opportunities at some of our major events, and can be recognised and nominated for the annual British Rowing Volunteer of the Year Awards.
SUPPORT members benefit from our specialist personal accident and third-party liability insurance, arranged by Howden, the UK’s largest independent insurance brokers.
You’ll also get tailored communications from British Rowing, six editions of Rowing & Regatta magazine a year, and great discounts from sports retailers, on the high street and online.
How much will SUPPORT membership cost?
SUPPORT membership is £31.00 a year.
How do I become a SUPPORT member?
You’ll be able to buy British Rowing SUPPORT membership when it launches in November.
If you are currently a British Rowing Umpire then you will automatically be moved to SUPPORT- Umpire membership. If you are an Umpire and a British Rowing Gold member, then you will be transferred to RACE so that you will continue to get the benefit of a Race Licence, but you will also receive the benefits of SUPPORT membership.
Why create a SUPPORT membership?
We wanted to create a membership offer that recognises, supports and celebrates people that have a key role in the sport, lets them get the most out of rowing with tailored courses and exclusive access to events, and to provide a way to tailor our support for this group of people – and potentially their membership fee – both now and in the future.
We are excited about the development of this membership and the scope to support even more parts of the community. We’ll be conducting further research to understand how we can tailor this membership even more to individuals in the future.
Will I get one of the new membership cards – and when?
SUPPORT members get our new, improved membership card and joining pack when they next renew, or when taking out British Rowing membership for the first time.
Our new membership card is plastic and pre-printed so, by very popular demand, you won’t have to assemble it yourself, or cut out and reuse your photo from last year’s card!
The card will have all your details, photo relevant qualifications printed onto it (eg. Umpire, first aid or coaching qualifications). You’ll update and upload this information online, through our new system.
Why should I become a member of British Rowing?
As well as providing products and services to support you, your membership of British Rowing plays a vital role in supporting the sport. We are a non-profit organisation, so all income from your membership fee is invested back into the sport at a grassroots level.
This means your membership provides direct support and assistance to rowers and coaches, and to the many hundreds or community, school and university clubs across the country. It drives the development of coach education and training, and helps provide critical functions to the sport, including anti-doping, safeguarding and competition management.
