If you’re a British Rowing member, we’ve got some important news to share. In a few weeks’ time you’ll start to see the first in a series of changes to your British Rowing membership, aimed at improving your experience as a member and better recognising your role in the sport.

These changes are the result of a wide-ranging consultation process over the last 12 months, including our biggest ever survey of British Rowing members, interviews with cross-sections of current and former members, and discussions with British Rowing’s Regional Chairmen, standing committees and Board.

Over 1,300 of you took part in the 2017 membership survey alone, generating nearly 3,000 pieces of verbatim feedback for us to take into consideration. Lots of positive insight came out of the survey, including that 62% of respondents were proud to be a British Rowing member, with 62% also satisfied or very satisfied with the membership services that British Rowing provides.

At the same time, it was clear from many of the comments that we needed to take a fresh approach to making membership relevant to everyone in the sport – through the benefits we provide, the communications we send and the way we present our membership offer.

So what’s changing this year?

Different membership categories

This year we’ll be introducing four new types of membership, called RACE, ROW, COACH and SUPPORT, to replace the current ones.

RACE and ROW membership largely improve on our current Gold and Silver membership categories, for all types of rowers. COACH and SUPPORT have been specifically developed for that incredibly important group of coaches, umpires and volunteers that support our rowers, clubs and competitions.

We’ll be sharing full details of each of these membership types over the next few weeks, so look out for further updates.

Updated membership cards and packs

If you’ve ever struggled to assemble your British Rowing membership card the night before a race, or accidentally put it through the washing machine (and don’t worry, we’ve all been there), you’ll be glad to hear that, from launch, all new and renewing members will receive a personalised, waterproof, plastic membership card / Race Licence.

Why your membership is so important

As well as providing services to support you, your membership plays a key role in supporting the sport.

British Rowing is a non-profit organisation, so all the income from your membership fee is invested directly back into rowing at a grassroots level.

This enables us to provide direct support and assistance to rowers and the many hundreds of community, school and university clubs across the country.

It drives the development of coach education and training, and helps provide critical functions such as safeguarding, anti-doping and competition management.

This will come in a redesigned British Rowing membership pack, pre-printed with a colour photo of you and your relevant personal and club details – so you can just pop it straight onto a lanyard or into your kit bag.

New online member management system

To support these changes we’ll be launching a new online membership management system, replacing our existing system which is now over 10 years old.

The new system will improve your experience of buying, changing or renewing your British Rowing membership, booking onto courses and events, checking your Ranking Points, updating your personal details, accessing your British Rowing member benefits and much more.

The new system will sit on the same platform as our new British Rowing ClubHub Portal, also launching later this year, so if your club signs up to British Rowing ClubHub you’ll be able to manage both your British Rowing membership and your club membership in one place.

We’re looking forward to sharing further details on all of the changes outlined in this update in the coming weeks, which are part of a wider plan to improve our membership offer and to better support you as members. To help us understand how best we can do this, we’d really appreciate 10 minutes of your time to complete the 2018 British Rowing membership survey. All responses are confidential, and we will share the insight and outcomes with you later in the year.
