Thames Rowing Club – Assistant Coach, Men’s Squad

Thames Rowing Club, one of the oldest and most successful rowing clubs in the country, are looking to recruit an Assistant Coach to join Head Coach Sander Smulders and Women’s Coach Thomas Mapp for the 2023/24 season and beyond. We are a club for athletes looking to train and compete at a high level and realise their athletic potential alongside full time employment. With a squad of 80-100 athletes (split evenly across men and women), the club targets club and intermediate wins at HWR and HRR every year. Since 2015, the club have 10 HRR wins and 5 HWR wins to their name.

Our boathouse is situated on the Putney Embankment on the Tideway stretch of the Thames and we have a large and competitive fleet of Empachers and Filippis maintained by our Boatman Jack Clark. In addition we have an erg gym including 30+ Concept 2 ergometers, several RowPerfects and Concept 2 ErgBikes and a fully-equipped free weights room and rowing tank.

The Role 

The successful applicant, supported by our Head Coach and a large team of accomplished volunteer coaches, will lead one of the country’s top performing and most ambitious club squads for the 2023/24 season.

The key objectives in this role are to build and maintain a large, competitive squad to target wins at HRR in both the club and intermediate level events and to operate a programme that is compatible with athletes in full time employment.

You will be tasked with providing high level coaching both on and off the water, strategic data analysis and day to day squad organisation.

Our current programme consists of a mixture of water and gym-based training and usually encompasses all the major domestic races alongside a European training camp.

Hours

Full time, 40 hours per week including weekend working. Hours may vary dependent on time of season.

Travel

You will be required to be at all major domestic races, as well as a week long European training camp.

Requirements

  • Experience coaching crews to success at top club/university/school level is preferable but not mandatory.
  • We welcome coaches who are looking to take the next step into their coaching career.
  • TRC are looking to develop a coach to the next level and youth or inexperience is not strictly a bar.
  • Full UK driving licence/international equivalent.
  • Passion for the sport

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:

(If not held, these will need to be attained once in post)

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 or international equivalent •Trailer towing licence
  • Trailer towing licence

Salary and Benefits

  • £27,500 – £34,000 dependent on experience and qualifications
  • Self-contained one bedroom flat on top of the boathouse available to rent at a competitive rate inclusive of utilities (further details of this can be provided on request).
