Kingston Grammar School – Assistant Coach and Boatman

Kingston Grammar School are looking to recruit an excellent Assistant Rowing Coach & Boatman to join our successful Rowing department.

This role is offered on a fixed term contract until the end of the next academic year (31st July 2024).

Reporting to: Director of Rowing

Hours:

30 hours per week (including Saturdays).

Boatman: 18 hours on weekdays to include race days by agreement with the Director of Rowing.

Assistant Rowing Coach: 10 hours per week Mondays 4pm-6pm, Tuesdays 1.30pm-4pm, Thursdays 4pm-6pm and Saturdays 7am-12pm plus events in agreement with the Director of Rowing.

Admin assistance: 2.5 hours per week to be agreed with the Director of Rowing.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Boatman:
• General repairs on the rowing boats.
• Keeping the boathouse, and storage cupboards tidy and ordered.
• Keeping track of spare parts stock and liaising with the Director of Rowing to determine spares required in stock.
• Keeping fuel tanks for launches full.
• Liaising with manufactures/ repairers externally to transport boats to and from the facilities for major repairs/ refurbishment.
• Keep landing stages clean.
• Keep the coaching launches in good condition including hulls and decks.
• Basic maintenance of the launch engines & to arrange annual servicing of engines.
• To assist the Director of Rowing to keep safety equipment in order including (but not exclusively):
– Launch safety bags (as suggested by British Rowing RowSafe)
– Lifejackets (annual testing, keep stock of spare CO2 cannisters for replacement
• Towing to races and training camps as required by the Director of Rowing (D1 license required and experience of towing an advantage but training can be provided for this if needs be). This may include some overnight stays.
• Assisting at races with boat repairs and loading/ unloading of trailer.
• Liaising with other maintenance staff at the school to assist with boats/ boathouse upkeep where required.

Assistant Rowing Coach:
• Attendance at some or all of the club’s race days in agreement with the Director of Rowing.
• Assisting with coaching during holiday sessions as agreed with the Director of Rowing

Person Specification

Qualifications:
• UKCC Level 2 qualified as a minimum

Experience:
• Experience maintaining and repairing boats
• Coaching experience preferred, or be willing to undertake suitable training for further qualification

Skills and Knowledge:
• Excellent carpentry and DIY skills for repairing boats/hulls
• Full driving licence that qualifies you to tow a boat trailer (or be willing to undertake suitable training)

Personal Competencies and Qualities:
• Dedicated enthusiast for the sport of rowing
• Demonstrable flexible and hands-on approach to assist with the rapidly changing work environment
• Able to manage time and prioritise effectively
• Self-starter, able to take the initiative and be proactive
• Physically able to cope with heavy lifting, carrying and manual handling
• Problem solving ability and calm under pressure
