Developing Club Facilities

British Rowing’s Facilities Service is here to help

A good starting point for clubs is to read Section 4: Facility Development in our Club Development Guide; the development of your facilities should, of course, be considered within your club’s plan for developing its activities. This covers optimising your existing facilities as well as building new facilities, and includes several case studies.

The British Rowing Legal Helpline powered by Irwin Mitchell provides affiliated clubs with free-to-access legal advice over the phone.

Alongside this, Section 4: Facilities Management in our Club Management Guide covers the important topics of tenures and leases, and environmental sustainability.

More generally, Sport England has good advice on facilities development for sports clubs. Their Design and Cost Guidance may be particularly useful for information on issues such as planning a new clubhouse, making buildings accessible and calculating running costs. Sport England’s Club Matters website also provides guidance on capital projects.

Contact the British Rowing Facilities Service

Our facilities experts will be able provide specialist support and guidance as you start to plan. Contact us early on in the process as a little expert direction at the outset can save a lot of time and avoid rework later on.

For example, we can give you an overview of how the legal structure of your club (e.g. Community Amateur Sports Cub, Company Limited by Guarantee, Community Interest Company, Charitable Incorporated Organisation etc) can impact the financing of your project either through grant funding eligibiliy or VAT exemption or recovery; more information about tenures and leases; and tips for making successful funding applications.
