Glover and Stanning win semi in Holland

Olympic Champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning qualified for Saturday’s World Championships final by winning their semi-final in dominant style this morning in Amsterdam in 7:16.62.

“That was a good day at the office. We implemented what we said we would do. Often that’s the most difficult thing to do because under pressure in race situations you sometimes do things completely differently to your plan”, said Glover.

By the 100m mark the GB combination had a canvas lead. They extended that to three-quarters of a length by 300m gone and went on to win by almost seven seconds.

Megan Kalmoe and Kerry Simmonds of the USA won the opposing semi-final in a similar time.

Glover, from Penzance, and Stanning, from Lossiemouth, benefitted from some very still morning weather conditions on the Bosbaan lake which has previously seen rain, wind, thunder and lightning since the Championships began last Sunday.

“They weren’t fast conditions but they were nice conditions today”, said Stanning. “It was good to be the first race of the day with a really calm warm up, too”.

The duo are now through to a final on Saturday. “We’re looking forward to that final. It’s what we’ve been preparing for all season. It has a good feel to it”, said Stanning.

All the other semi-finals will be in this afternoon’s programme. The women’s pair was timetabled differently here because a number of rowers from other nations are doubling up into a bigger boat.

Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi, George Nash and Andrew Triggs Hodge, unbeaten this year in the men’s four at world cup or European level. All four were part of last year’s World championships gold medal winning eight.

Olympic champion Kat Copeland and 2013 World finalist Imogen Walsh are also in semi-final action today in the lightweight women’s double as are the men’s quadruple scull of Graeme Thomas, Sam Townsend, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert, winners of the last two world cups.

The day will culminate for the GB Rowing Team with finals for the para-rowing boats in which Britain’s Tom Aggar and Rachel Morris will contest the single scull events and the mixed coxed four will mount a defence of the title won in 2013.

The afternoon’s racing programme starts at 13.15 UK time with the para-rowing finals commencing at 16.45 UK time.
