At the 2012 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials held on 10/11 March at Eton/Dorney, Sam came 7th in the lightweight men's single scull.

Sam raced in the lightweight men's quad at the 2010 World Rowing U23 Championships in Brest, Belarus winning a bronze medal.  He then went on to compete in the lightweight men's double with Jamie Kirkwood at the FISU World University Rowing Championships in Hungary, where he came 8th.

Sam started rowing in 2005 in his first year at Strathclyde University where he studied for and achieved a Masters in Aero-Mechanical Engineering.  In 2009 he won a gold medal in the lightweight men's four at the National Championships.

When not rowing, Sam enjoys working on the farm where he grew up and cycling.  In April/May 2008 he cycled 7001 km in 59 days from Singapore through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, finishing in Hanoi.  

His ambition is to take part in the Olympics.
