GBRT BEACH SPRINT 2024 - SELECTION TRIAL 1


EVENT OVERVIEW

The GB Beach Sprint Selection Trial 1, takes place on Saturday 27th April at Bournemouth Beach (between Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers, directly in front of the ‘Toft Zig Zag’).

The event is for rowers who wish to be considered for selection for the 2024 GB Beach Sprint Teams, as outlined in the 2024 selection strategy.

The trial will act as the final selection for those wishing to be considered for the Coastal Women’s 1x, Coastal Men’s 1x, Coastal Mixed 2x, U19 Coastal Women’s 1x, U19 Coastal Men’s 1x and U19 Coastal Mixed 2x to race at the European Coastal Rowing Championships, Poland and World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals, Italy. Rowers in this group should enter the selection trial in the relevant age/sex category above.

To be considered for selection for these boats, in addition to attendance at this trial, rowers are required race in one or more of the following events;

11 MayWelsh Senior Beach Sprint Championships (Fishguard)
18 MayScottish Beach Sprint Championships (St Andrews)

Please note 

The following boat classes will be selected at GB Selection Trial 2 - Senior, August 3-4th, Tees/Redcar: Coastal Mixed 4x+.

The following events will be selected at the GB Selection Trial 2 - U19, August 3-4th, Colwyn Bay, Wales: U19 Coastal Men's 2x, U19 Coastal Women's 2x.


WHEN ENTERING THE GB BEACH SPRINT SELECTION TRIAL 1 PLEASE ENSURE YOU ARE MAKING THE ENTRY UNDER THE CORRECT CLUB HUB ACCOUNT

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE MADE USING THE ATHLETES OWN CLUB HUB ACCOUNT, UNLESS THE ENTRY IS BEING MADE BY A CLUB. THERE IS NO OPTION TO TRANSFER IF MADE UNDER THE WRONG NAME


PRE-TRIAL REQUIREMENTS

On entering the trial, rowers are required to submit the following rowing machine assessment scores;

  • 7 stroke max wattage testSet the monitor to display wattage. From a standing start, row two build-up strokes followed by five consecutive strokes at maximal effort. Record the largest wattage seen on the monitor for a single stroke within the final five strokes
  • 250m free rate – From a standing start. On completion record the total time, average 500m split and average stroke rate from the monitor memory
  • 1000m free rateFrom a standing start. On completion record the total time, average 500m split and average stroke rate from the monitor memory

All assessments must be completed on a static Concept 2 Ergometer, and must be witnessed (the name of the witness should be included when submitting the scores).

All assessments must be completed on the following standardised drag factor – Senior Men (138), Senior Women and U19 Men (130), U19 Women (125)

The three assessments must be completed together within the same session, during a maximum of a one hour window, in the order listed above.

While there is no minimum cut off score to take part in the trial, in the event that the trial is oversubscribed the scores submitted may be used as a means of reducing entries where required


FORMAT AND SCHEDULE

Registration will open at approximately 8am on Saturday 27th April, and last assessments will take place up to 5pm

Rowers attending the trial will carry out a series of races in 1x and 2x, over a full Beach Sprint course, using a combination of processional time trial and two-lane side by side racing.

Exact schedule, number of races and final format of assessments will be dependent on the number of entries, weather conditions and other factors. As a guide rowers should prepare to race up to six times over the course of the day. A final schedule will be circulated a week prior to the trial to help rowers with final planning.

Boats will be provided. The manufacturers used will be Filippi or Swift. While different manufacturer boats won’t be raced against each other, different categories may use different boat types, depending on number of entries within each category and the number of boats available.

Rowers should bring their own oars. A limited number of oars are available at a cost of £10 per set.


ELIGIBILITY

To race at the GB Beach Sprint Selection Trial 1 you must be a British Rowing member and hold a valid British Passport.

To be eligible to enter the Under 19 (U19) category, Rowers must be born no earlier than 1 January 2006 and no later than 31 August 2008.

In the event that a rower is unable to attend the trial due to injury, illness or otherwise, they need to notify the selection panel who will make an exemption decision based on previous performance. Rowers may be required to provide further evidence to support an exemption request and the selection panel may consult with a doctor as required to approve or reject medical exemptions. TRAINING (FRIDAY 26th APRIL)

There will be training opportunities held on the day before the trial. This will be split into a morning session aimed at those who have taken part in Beach Sprint competition previously, and an afternoon session aimed at those who are racing in the format for the first time.
