York St John University Boat Club – Volunteer Coaches

York St. John University Boat Club is the oldest of all of the sports clubs at societies at York St. John, dating back to around 1856. Since then, the club has had a number of historical successes and some notable alumni amongst it’s members.

In a phase of post-pandemic and post-flood recovery the club is restructuring and remodelling to evolve into a progressive, forward-thinking club with commitment, compassion and community at the heart of everything our club and our rowers do.

Our ethos isn’t similar to other varsity clubs. We currently have neither the infrastructure nor investment to be an elite performance club. Whilst we aim to develop our rowers to be the best they can be, we set out not to exclude anyone. Winning isn’t an expectation here. Instead we aim to empower our members to become valued members of our rowing community whatever their contribution.

What is evident from the moment you’re welcomed into our boat house is that sense of community. Social, dedicated and collegiate people with a passion for rowing are those you’ll meet. Over the last few months alone the club has turned huge corners in training ambition and structure, performance at races and fleet.

Our dedicated learn to row programme launches shortly and we’re proud to boast substantial engagement and a waiting list for those opportunities to learn to row from new students.

We do have the support of two qualified coaches on a voluntary basis currently, but in order to really fulfil our vision and ambitions for this season and beyond, we need to expand our coaching cover for our learn to row programme and our novice crews.

With land and water session training programmes in place you can pick up from where we are and run with it or transform those plans into something stronger. You might be a coach already or new to coaching, rowing currently or retired from the sport but still as passionate. We need that passion and creativity and above all, a shared ethos.

We have a real opportunity to do something differently here and expand the potential of our young rowers and our club. We’re ready for change. The question is, are you?

For an informal discussion or to arrange a visit to the boathouse to meet crews and run a trial session, get in touch with us in the first instance via email to [email protected]

We’re looking forward to meeting you, coach.
