Scottish Rowing Coaching Futures Apprentice Coach

Contract: Full-time, two-year fixed term (flexible start date before 1 September 2021)

Location: Scottish Rowing Centre (but with travel across Scotland / GB + homeworking)

Salary: up to £25,000 + pension

Responsible to: Head of Performance Pathway

We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a retiring or recently retired performance athlete to join the Scottish Rowing performance coaching team for a two-year period as part of the Coaching Futures programme.

The Coaching Futures programme, funded by sportscotland and now supporting its third cohort, aims to increase the pool of home-grown world class coaches by creating opportunities for performance athletes to transition into coaching roles.

The apprentice coach will receive a bespoke learning and development programme, supported by Scottish Rowing, sportscotland and the GB Rowing Team, to help support their transition into coaching and their progression as a coach. Time will be allocated as part of the standard working week for personal development as well as ‘on-the-job’ learning.

The apprentice coach can expect to be deployed at various levels within the performance pathway including, but not limited to, the Institute Programme, the World Class Start Programme and the Junior Development Programme. There will also be regular opportunities to shadow coaches from the GB Rowing Team and as well as the chance to work with an experienced Coach Developer to reflect on their coaching practice.

Eligibility

Retiring, or recently retired (within the last 5 years), performance athletes should have experience of representing Great Britain (or equivalent) and ideally will have been a supported athlete within the GB ‘World Class Programme’ or the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme. You should also have a good understanding of the domestic sporting landscape and the opportunities and challenges facing clubs and coaches across Scotland (or equivalent). You will be seeking to pursue a career in coaching which ideally would be demonstrated by previous paid or voluntary coaching.

Key Responsibilities

The Coaching Futures apprentice coach will embark on a ‘learning journey’ whilst supporting the aims and objectives of the Scottish Rowing Performance Pathway Programme.

With the support of the Line Manager contribute towards the creation of a bespoke learning and development plan which will guide and inform the apprenticeship.
Deliver high quality coaching sessions in a variety of training environments, both on and off the water, to support the development of identified athletes.
Support the planning and delivery of agreed training camps, working as part of a multi-disciplinary coaching team.
Attend national and international competitions as required to support and monitor the progression of identified athletes.
Observe and shadow coaches working at all stages of the performance pathway.
Attend meetings and contribute to the effective working of the Scottish Rowing Performance Pathway Team.
Maintain accurate records of key projects and produce reports as requested.
Represent Scottish Rowing in meetings with member clubs, partner programmes and external agencies and portray a positive and professional image at all times.
Adhere to the Scottish Rowing Policies and Procedures with special attention given to policies on Child Protection, Anti-Doping (including the use of supplements) and Water Safety.
Undertake other relevant tasks at the request of the Line Manager.

It is anticipated that due to the unique nature of the Coaching Futures programme the role and associated responsibilities will evolve and develop over the two-year period.
