Job Description
Newark Rowing Club (NRC) are seeking an outstanding, proactive individual with a proven track record, to appoint as a paid Coach with overall responsibility for designing and implementing a coaching programme for all sections of the club’s active membership. The objective is to realise the potential of every member, while maintaining the benchmarks of success that have been achieved in recent years.
Working hours: 15-20 per week. Salary: Competitive based on experience (£15k)
Job Summary
The successful candidate will create and manage a coaching structure that supports all sections of the club, from an ambitious and successful junior squad, through both established women’s and men’s senior squads, to new Learn2Row participants. In addition to holding required coaching qualifications a demonstratable passion for the sport is essential.
In developing a sustainable performance culture for those members with ambitions that match those of the club, success will be benchmarked against delivering a succession of crews and individuals capable of achieving excellent results at national level (Henley, Nat Champs, Tideway Heads), Junior scullery, Inter-Regional and GB trials.
For those members that wish to participate at a lower level of competition, the Head Coach will be responsible for developing an inclusive programme that maximises success at the appropriate level and that delivers an enriched personal experience.
Duties / Responsibilities
Plan, implement, analyse, and revise annual coaching programmes that:
- utilise and direct the available volunteer coaching resources within the club.
- create and implement a safe and effective training programme by tailoring coaching to meet the needs of a range of ability levels
- teach sound rowing technique and physical conditioning
- plan, deliver and coach the water-based sessions, as well as all indoor/circuit sessions
- track and monitor the progress and development of the rowers in the squads
Continue the recruitment, coaching and development of a squad of highly committed junior rowers
Recruiting and developing new adult members into the sport of rowing, with an initial emphasis on the 18-30 age range
Assist with the recruitment of athletes to the club, including establishing / maintaining contact with feeder schools and dealing with enquiries from potential members
Organise rowing camps and training weekends
Help build an atmosphere of mutual support and respect between individual members and squads
Promote the safeguarding and welfare of the club members
Supervise the loading and unloading of trailers and trailering the boats
Contribute to maintaining the Boat House and the equipment to a high standard including the routine checking of boats, launches and equipment for damage and ensuring that the boathouse and gym area is kept clean, tidy and in good order
Accountability
- Work closely with the Club Captain, Vice-Captains’ and coaching volunteers within the Rowing Management Team (RMT) on all rowing matters, including events to be entered and crew compositions
- Maintain up to date squad details and work with Club Officers to ensure that athletes are paid up members of the Club Ethos and Culture
- Maintain appropriate standards of behaviour as an ambassador for NRC both on and off the water
- Work in conjunction with and support the NRC Committee to increase participation levels, offer inclusive sessions in a safe and sustainable way
Competencies (Required)
Appropriate Coaching Qualifications – preferably Level 3 Senior Club Coach that demonstrates exposure to:

- Ethical Coaching Practice
- Coaching Environment
- Decision Making and Crew Selection
- Sports Psychology
- Coach Mentoring
- Boat rigging and preparation
DBS Checked
Driving Licence RYA
Trailer driving licence
First aid certificate S&C qualification
Ability to work successfully and communicate effectively as leader of a coaching team, contributing to the education and development of volunteer coaches
Excellent networking skills and contacts within the rowing community
Competencies (Preferred)
Evidence of track record of delivered success at NRC’s stated ambition levels
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including being a good listener
Excellent planning and organisation skills
Ability to manage tasks and prioritise effectively
Ability to build and maintain relationships across different groups
Team Player demonstrating integrity, confidentiality, and tact
Ability to motivate and lead volunteer coaches
