Globe Rowing Club – Head Coach

Globe RC, in South East London, seeks a Head Coach to provide strategic leadership and coaching to our membership, working with other Club Coaches. The role has the opportunity for GB Pathway and Performance Development Academy exposure. Start date: August/September 2024.

About the club

We are one of the fastest growing rowing clubs in London based across Greenwich and the Royal Albert Docks. Our squads consist of performance, competition and development across both seniors and juniors. We compete in both sculling and sweeping.

We race at a range of British Rowing events with performance athletes aiming for HWR and HRR campaigns each season. A particular highlight, our performance juniors won the Nina Padwick trophy at Henley Women’s Regatta 2022. Other strong results have been posted at the British Championships, GB Trials and other regattas across sweep and sculling boats. In addition, currently we have 3 GB Start athletes within our squads.

As we look ahead to the next stage of our growth as a club we are looking for a passionate and proactive coach to drive consistency with our coaching team and across the squads.

The role:

  • A minimum of 12-15 hours a week coaching water and land training sessions outside of school and office hours. (scope to increase these hours – applicant dependent). Coaching at races and training camps.
  • Additional flexible income available through Learn To Rows, sculling courses, private lessons, GoRow Indoor and corporate events (the latter two need to be developed).
  • Creating and managing a training program for both water and land training.
  • Working with other coaches to ensure cohesive experience for all club members through alignment on rowing technique, training plans and racing schedule.
  • Working with Committee to organise training camps, off site training and racing.
  • Promoting atmosphere of mutual support and respect for a positive culture towards training, individual and crew progression, and overall club ethos.

Skills and Experience:

  • Good working knowledge of effective training programmes, periodisation, physiology and technical skills.
  • Ability to manage a range of fitness levels and technical abilities.
  • Knowledge or experience of coxing and the ability to provide some feedback and guidance to coxes.
  • Understanding of equipment and rigging, and the ability to advise on equipment purchases.
  • Current driving licence and willingness to tow a boat trailer.
  • Organisational skills and flexibility.

Qualifications (desirable but not essential) – we would support with obtaining these qualifications if needed

  • Coaching experience (British Rowing Level 2 or above qualification).
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2.
  • First Aid certified.
  • Recognised qualification in Strength and Conditioning and/or considerable experience of leading/partaking in S&C sessions for rowers.

Salary: Pay will be negotiable based on experience and commitment. Reasonable expenses will be covered. The club can support additional qualifications where deemed required for the role.
