Take your first step into coaching  and learn how to support rowers through skill based sessions with our UKCC Level 2 Award, Session Coach.

The Session Coach Award is the first award for coaching individuals on the water and is aimed at beginner coaches.

Session Coach is a 1st4Sport accredited qualification that replaces the ‘Learn to Row Instructor’. The award trains and supports our coaches to the best possible standard. It is part of the national qualification framework that allows learners to continue with their development through Continued Professional Development.

18 hours of face-to-face tutoring and an internal assessment which takes place at a later date.

What will I get out of it?

As a Session Coach Award holder you will be qualified to plan and deliver rowing coaching sessions for participants independently as part of a wider rowing programme.

Who can attend?

Anyone over 18 years of age wanting to develop their coaching skills. No prior coaching experience required. 

In addition to this you must be:

  • A British Rowing registered member. Non-members can apply online for instant registration (England and Wales); or
  • A current Scottish Rowing member, a current member of a Scottish Rowing club, and resident in Scotland (Scotland only).

How is the course structured?

It focuses on developing three areas:

1.   Managing risk

2.   Planning for activity and fitness

3.   Developing skills

The course includes both theory and practical learning, with a focus on delivering skills based sessions.

How do I apply?

Step 1

Complete the two prerequisite courses online. Available free of charge on RowHow:

Don’t forget to print off and keep your certificates for your portfolio!

Step 2

Register on a Session Coach course.

After completing 18 hours of face-to-face learning you are then encouraged to go away and practise your coaching skills.

The final assessment will take place at least six weeks after your face-to-face learning, and will include an observation by an Assessor. Feedback by the Assessor will be provided and an action plan agreed for your ongoing development.
