Great Britain added a silver medal to its World Championships tally in Shanghai as Lauren Henry finished second, just 0.03 seconds behind Ireland in the Women’s single sculls (W1x) final. Lauren has won a medal at every race this season, making a strong mark in her first season in this boat class.

Speaking after the race she said: “Obviously, I’m really pleased to come away with a medal, but it is disappointing. I said I was coming here for the gold and it’s sad to miss out by less than a centimetre. All credit to Fiona (Ireland), she’s a fantastic sculler.

“I’m going to use this during the winter and  come back better and stronger next season. Hopefully I can win that elusive women’s single sculling gold for Great Britain at a World Championships.”

Earlier in the regatta the GB Rowing Team won seven medals. Golds came from Benjamin Pritchard in the PR1 Men’s single sculls, the Men’s four and the PR3 Mixed coxed four. Silvers were won by the Men’s and Women’s quadruple sculls and the Men’s eight, while the Women’s eight collected a bronze medal.

Also racing today were Sam Murray and Annie Caddick who narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing in fourth place in the PR3 mixed double sculls (PR3 Mix 2x) final.

Louise Kingsley, GB Rowing Team’s Director of Performance said: “What a successful start to the LA cycle. We’ve seen medals won by our Men’s, Women’s and Paralympic squad and impressive performances across the team. Of the 37 athletes who made the podium, we have twenty-one athletes who are bringing home medals from their first ever World Championships, showing that the pathway is strong and I’m excited to see how they all build on this as we work through the cycle.

“This event has come with some challenges. The heat out here being one of them. But the ‘team behind the team’, the coaches and support staff, have all pulled together to ensure the athletes made it to the start line brilliantly well prepared. The performances we have seen out here in Shanghai would not have been possible without their efforts – a big thank you to them!”
