We’re Across The Line! Join us to look back on a brilliant bank holiday weekend of rowing from across the UK.
A double dose of racing in Gloucester
“We had another successful year of racing. Saturday’s Junior and Master’s regatta saw more than 130 races take place over three divisions with some really close racing,” explained Social Secretary Sophie Jones.
“On Sunday, our Open regatta, whilst lower on entries, we enjoyed the bank holiday sun and close racing. Everyone had a great day which was made even more special for us by a home win for Gloucester in the Open Eights, winning our James Wasdell Cup, named in memory of our very much missed chairman who died suddenly last year.”
“We’re already looking forward to next year’s regatta, where we will be the hosts of the two West of England Cups for Open Coxed Fours and Women’s Coxed Fours. We are also especially excited to be celebrating our 180th anniversary next year! Something that we will celebrate at both our Spring and Autumn Head races as well as the Summer Regatta,” concluded Sophie.

150 years of Ross Regatta
Sunday and Monday saw two thrilling days of racing first at Ross Masters and Junior Regatta and then the bank holiday Monday served up a scorcher at Ross Open Regatta. Despite the event being moved at short notice notice due to water levels, the club and all the competitors were able to celebrate 150 years of Ross Regatta to the full.
“We celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Ross Rowing Regatta under unique conditions,” explained Jeremy Picton-Turbervill, Ross RC President.
“Despite having just 6 cm of water depth, (far less than last year’s 13 cm which forced a cancellation) we managed to adjust the course, shortening and shifting it 200 meters upstream to deeper water, even fine-tuning the finish line on the day to ensure safe and fair competition.”

Jeremy continued, ’We were absolutely determined that we should have the regatta this year to celebrate our 150th Anniversary, and I’m so pleased that we were able to do so! The feedback I got from crews during the prize-giving was great. They loved the course, even though it was only 500 metres long.
Thanks to fantastic weather and the commitment of the entire Ross RC membership, the shortened 500-metre course saw close, exciting racing with zero safety incidents, except for one spider-induced tumble that saw a young lady in a single go swimming! In the end, what could have been a challenging regatta turned into a memorable success, and we’re proud to have made our 150th anniversary event a great one. Hopefully, we’ll do it all again next year!”
