It was Eyde’s turn to support coach Ash Cowley when she applied her Club Coach Qualification to help him to victory

Newark RC rower Eyde has just completed her Club Coach Qualification with British Rowing.

“My coach Ash Cowley motivated me to start coaching. He’s a great coach – he keeps me motivated to keep achieving in the sport.”

It was fitting then that the first boat Eyde coached at a competition was Ash’s Mixed B Double Sculls at the British Rowing Masters Championships. Her training paid off as the crew from Newark RC crossed the line in first place.

“I’d tell anyone my age who might want to coach that it might be scary at first, but be confident in yourself.”

“I’m chuffed.” Eyde said, watching her crew pull in to receive their gold medals. “It’s a great atmosphere here, really positive. I’m really happy with the win.”

The Club Coach Qualification course covers coaching principles, safety and session planning, as well as skill and technique development. The course is underpinned by coaching behaviours and clear communication, with a focus on both theory and practical learning.

“My tutor for the Qualification was Marcus Walker, he’s great at what he does. The process was really smooth.”

What were the motivational words Eyde left Ash and his doubles partner Kate Cawley with when they set out to race? “I just told them to send it,” she laughed.

“I want to coach some juniors next, hopefully at the British Rowing Club Championships. I definitely want to stay coaching! I’d tell anyone my age who might want to coach that it might be scary at first, but be confident in yourself.”

“Its been fantastic to see our junior squad members get involved with coaching and growing the strong family culture we have at the club.” Ash said. “Eyde is doing a brilliant job and I hope that this is an exciting first step for her in her coaching career.”
