Positive start for GB Rowing Team at World Juniors

Two of the three crews in action for the GB Rowing Team on the opening day of the World Junior Rowing Championships in Hamburg won their heats.

The junior men’s pair of Oliver Jonas, from Tideway Scullers’ School, and Arthur Doyle, of St Paul’s School, got the GB Rowing Team’s 2014 campaign off to a good start when they emerged with a slight lead early in their heat .

They were ahead of Switzerland who tracked them closely until Just before the 1500m when the Swiss made their move but the GB boat responded and held onto that lead to win in 7:11.12. They moved into Friday’s quarter-finals with Switzerland, Canada and the USA following them in that order.

Chris Lawrie, competing at his second World Juniors, stroked the GB quadruple scull into an early lead in this afternoon’s heats, raced in bright and warm sunshine with a very gentle cross-head wind.

Lawrie, of Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, and his crew-mates Rowan Law, from Nottingham RC, Samuel Meijer, of Westminster School, and Norwich RC’s Steven Parsonage held that lead through the halfway mark and went on to win and book a quarterfinal place by five seconds in 6:18.75 from the Netherlands with the much-fancied Italians in third.

Fraser Russell of Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School BC, and James White of Windsor Boys’ School BC, were next in action in the junior men’s double scull.

The duo were lying third early in the race, two seconds off the lead which was held by Australia in the adjacent lane. Turkey were holding second. Australia stretched out their lead by halfway with GB and Turkey chasing them.

China emerged strongly in the second half to nudge past the GB boat and ultimately take second behind Australia but ahead of Turkey. Meanwhile the British boat, in fourth, still secured passage to the quarter-finals.

“It’s been a positive start with all three crews progressing”, said team manager John Layng. “The pair had a ding-dong battle with the Swiss and the quad wanted to take the race to the opposition and lay down a marker which they clearly did”.

Since the GB Rowing Team for this event was announced some adjustments have been made because of illness or injury. Molly Harding has been replaced in the junior women’s quadruple scull by Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne of Gloucester-Hartpury.

Matilda Martin of Headington School, Oxford, has replaced Alex Slabbert in the junior women’s four.

Racing continues tomorrow with heats featuring GB crews in the junior women’s four and quad and the junior men’s coxed four and eight.
