Two squads of GB Rowing Team Juniors named today

On a day when racing starts at the World U23 Championships, two further squads of Great Britain’s best junior rowers have been announced for the World Rowing Junior Championships in Hamburg, Germany, and the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Libourne, France.

A squad of 30 rowers in seven boats will compete at the World Juniors in Hamburg from 6-10 August. At the equivalent 2013 event, GB made history when Jess Leyden, who has this week graduated to race in the same event at World U23 level, won the women’s single scull for the first time in the nation’s history.

A squad of 46 rowers across 13 boats will compete at the Coupe which takes place from 1-3 August in Libourne.

The World Rowing Junior Championships is the pinnacle of U18 international racing and, for many, this will be their opportunity to shine on the World stage.

Saskia Budgett of Tideway Scullers’ School heads a list of those racing in Hamburg who all competed in last year’s Coupe in Lucerne and have made the step up. They include Chetan Chauhan-Sims of Emanuel School, William England of Monmouth School, Sam Meijer of Westminster School, Rowan Law from Nottingham RC, Charles Thurston (Eton College) Arthur Doyle (St Pauls School), Liam Tustin (Evesham RC), Alex Gass (Reading Blue Coat School) and James White (Windsor Boys’ School).

Budgett is the daughter of Dr Richard Budgett, now the IOC’s Medical Director, who thirty years ago this year won gold in the coxed four at the Los Angeles Olympic Games with Sir Steve Redgrave, Andy Holmes, Martin Cross and cox Adrian Ellison.

Chris Lawrie and Anna Thornton, meanwhile, will race in Hamburg before departing swiftly to Nanjing in China where they will represent GB in the men’s and women’s singles respectively at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Charles Elwes of Radley College and Lawrie are the only people in the squad of 30 for Hamburg who competed at the equivalent competition in Trakai last year.

Charles Thurston, who is in the squad for the junior coxed men’s four, and Alexander Barakat, who is in the squad for the junior men’s eight, were both members of Eton College’s victorious men’s eight crew which won the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at this year’s Henley Royal Regatta.

Sir David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director has recently underlined the important role played in recent years by Henley Royal Regatta in developing events for junior crew scullers – the Fawley Challenge Cup for boys and the Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup for girls both for quadruple sculls. This gives young GB rowers, like Steven Parsonage, Rowan Law, Samuel Meijer and Chris Lawrie, who will race the junior quadruple scull in Hamburg, the chance to develop their skills.

Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School students, Lawrie and Fraser Russell, selected into the junior double for Hamburg, won the 2014 Fawley Cup at Henley.

Flo Pickles, also a Henley winner and a former Evesham rower who is supported by SportsAid and who is now part of the GB Rowing Team’s Start programme at Gloucester-Hartpury, will race in the junior women’s quad in Hamburg.

COUPE

The Couple de la Jeunesse is a European team competition with emphasis on U17s. The trophy goes to the nation with the most points – GB were overall winners in 2013.

This year’s team includes Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne, racing n the quad. Hodgkins-Byrne is following in the footsteps of her older sister Mathilda, who raced at the Coupe in 2012 and who is part of the GB Rowing Team World U23 team this week.

Rufus Biggs was also a member of the Sir William Borlase’s Fawley Challenge Cup winning crew, and he will race in the quad in Libourne.
