Leyden in storming form for GB Rowing Team at World Juniors

Jess Leyden was in storming form in today’s quarter-final of the women’ single scull at the World Junior Championships in Trakai which she won in 7:50.35.

Italy was her only challenger with Romania in third, the British woman leading from the outset.

“Everyone has done as expected and progressed”, said GB Team Manager John Layng. Conditions in Trakai were cooler than previously with the wind shifting round to a tail win. “Conditions were perfect when Jess [Leyden] raced and she has had a really good scull today”.

Lauren Kedar and Anna Fairs are through to the final of the World Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, after taking third spot in today’s semi-finals. Australia were the early race leaders and were chased throughout by Germany and then Great Britain.

Racing in lane three, Ben Maxwell and Alastair Douglass, progressed to the semi-finals of the junior men’s pair with a third-placed finish behind Turkey and the USA. They worked their way back into contention after a slower first half and held off Russia to book their slot.

Sholto Carnegie and Seb Devereux also made sure of a semi-final place in the men’s double scull. They were second behind race leaders, Romania, until the final 500m of their quarter-final today when the Lithuanians overhauled them. Third place for GB in 6:26.80.
