Munich medallists in GB Rowing Team for World Juniors

A clutch of 2013 Munich Junior International gold medallists and Henley winners are amongst the GB Rowing Team named today for the World Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, from 7-11 August.

“We are taking a small team to Trakai but one which has already proved its form this year”, said Sir David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director of the squad which will race seven of the available 13 boat classes.

Jess Leyden, an Australian Youth Olympic silver medallist and double Munich gold winner, will race the single scull. The Hollingworth Lake club rower will be joined on the women’s team by fellow Munich double gold medallists Anna Fairs, from Tees, and Lauren Kedar, from Reading in the women’s pair.

Fairs is part of the GB Rowing Team Start programme based at Tees. The SRC Bede sixth former recently sat A-Levels in Biology, Geography and PE.
Supported by Sportsaid, she is coached at Tees by Olympic gold medallist Kat Copeland’s coach, James Harris, and finished seventh in the women’s four at last year’s junior Worlds.

The men’s eight won at Munich and five of those gold medallists – Elliott Piercy (St Georges College), Harry Lonergan (Shrewsbury School), Matthew Carter (Abingdon School), Oli Knight (St Edwards’ School) and Matthew Benstead (Hampton School) – have been selected into the Trakai eight.

Benstead was part of the GB eight which took bronze in a thrilling World Juniors final in Plovdiv a year ago as did Titus Morey (St Edwards’ School), also named in the eight today.

Joel Cooper (Abingdon School) won the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup for schoolboy eights at Henley this year whilst Ian Middleton completes the line-up.

Harry Lonergan (Shrewsbury School) was part of the 2012 World Junior Championships team, falling just outside the medals with a fourth place in the men’s four. Lonergan is a former Walton RC and Tideway Scullers rower.

Leander’s Sebastian Devereux and Marlow’s Sholto Carnegie will race the double scull in Trakai. They were Munich winners in both the double and the quadruple scull, showing that they are a form crew this year. The duo also went head to head in singles at the GB Rowing Team Junior Small Boats regatta at Dorney in April with Carnegie winning by just half a second.

Marlow’s Harry Glenister, winner of Munich gold in the quad with Carnegie and Devereux, is racing the quad in Trakai with Andrew Joel (Windsor Boys School), Chris Lawrie (Sir William Borlase Grammar) and Callum Gathercole (Walton RC).

Joshua Kent, winner of gold in Munich and from Marlow RC, is named as the team’s reserve sculler.

GB will also field a coxed four with Robbie Wendin and Charles Elwes of Radley College. They are joined by Will Geffen of Eton College, Misha Wilcockson of St Paul’s and cox Sam Collier from Hampton.

The men’s pair has been named as Ben Maxwell from Pangbourne College and Alastair Douglass of Hampton.

Lead Coach Richard Boulton will head up the British delegation in Trakai backed by Steve Gunn with Dr Lucy Free and physio Becs Hurran providing medical support.
