Seven Up for GB Juniors in Munich

The GB Rowing Team’s successful junior squad has returned from the Munich Junior International Regatta with seven titles

Both Jess Leyden in the single scull and the women’s pair of Anna Fairs and Lauren Kedar took two victories apiece across the two-day event that is raced as a separate regatta on each of the Saturday and Sunday.

Fairs is part of the GB Rowing Team Start programme, a renowned talent identification and development scheme, and competes for Tees RC whilst Kedar is from Reading RC. Both raced at last year’s World Junior Championships in the women’s four which finished seventh.

Leyden, from Hollingworth Lake club, was also part of the 2012 World Junior team, taking seventh place overall with the quadruple scull.

“Overall I believe these are the best results GB has ever had at this Regatta”, said team manager Richard Boulton. “It was one of the smaller teams that we have fielded at the event but we focussed on quality with every rower coming home with a medal.

“Not all the crews that will contest the World Championships were there, though, of course. So we still have work to do”.

The World Junior Championships take place this year in Trakai from 7-11 August.

Britain’s other victories in the Under 18s contest, which featured around 12 other European nations, included the men’s double of Seb Devereux and Sholto Carnegie on the Saturday – the first time GB has won this event for over 10 years.

On Sunday it was the turn of the junior men’s eight and quadruple scull to add to the GB tally.

Alex Gass coxed the eight which featured a duo from St Edwards School in Oxford – Callum Jones and Oli Knight – and from Hampton School – Matt Benstead and Ali Douglass – as well as Harry Lonergan of Shrewsbury School, Misha Wilcockson of St Pauls,, Elliott Piercy of St George’s College and Matthew Carter of Abingdon School.

Benstead and Jones were part of the GB crew which took bronze in the men’s eight at last year’s World Juniors.

The junior men’s quad included the victorious Saturday double of Devereux of Leander Club and three Marlow Rowing Club members – Carnegie, Harry Glenister and Josh Kent.
