The following Terms and Conditions apply to all British Rowing Learning, Education and Development Courses/Workshops or Development Opportunities such as 1-1 development, webinars, coaching cafes or conferences

For ease, the term “Development Event” will be used to refer to the above in the terms and conditions below.

These terms apply to bookings for any Development Events delivered by British Rowing. Please read them carefully before booking any Development Event as they set out important information about your rights and our obligations.

You must agree to these before making your booking.

If you are booking a Development Event  on behalf of another person, you must gain their permission (or their parents if U18) to provide us with their personal data before making the booking. You must also make sure that they have had the opportunity to read any booking information (including these terms and conditions) and that they have agreed that you can accept these terms on their behalf as part of the booking process.

Your Information

Any information that you provide us will be dealt with in line with our Privacy Policy.

1.  Booking Development Events

  • Bookings are completed when you make the on-line booking and pay the development event fee.
  • Some development events have requirements/prerequisites that must be adhered to. These will be made clear on the development event information webpage of our website and on the development event booking page..
  • Upon booking, you will receive an email confirming successful payment and booking. Before the development event you will receive an email with attendance details including the venue address (where appropriate), and a contact for the event. If you have any questions before this, please contact the Learning, Education and Development team at [email protected].

2. Development Event Descriptions

Development event descriptions are set out on the British Rowing Website and indicate the general nature of the development event and does not guarantee its content. British Rowing reserves the right to amend the content of the development event at any time.

3. Technical Requirements for online development events

  • To access the online part of any development event, including resources and virtual classrooms or webinars, you will need your own equipment and internet access. You are responsible for any charges you may incur in connection with your internet access and downloads.
  • We are not liable if your device does not meet the minimum technical requirements communicated at the point of booking, due to poor internet connection or any other reason outside our reasonable control.

4.  Registration Forms

You will be required to complete a registration form to include medical information when booking on to a development event.

  • For all development events (face-to-face and online)
    For British Rowing to accommodate any specific physical, learning or communication needs, you must inform us of these. It is your responsibility to let us know via the registration form or by contacting [email protected]. If you do let us know of any particular needs, we may need to contact you to discuss this further. We will also need to share this information with our development event delivery team in confidence.
  • For 1st4sport courses (face-to-face and online)
    If you are a coach who is pursuing any of the following courses, and you have particular needs:
    –  1st4sport Level 2 Award in Coaching Rowing (Session Coach course)
    –  1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rowing (Club Coach course)
    –  1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Strength & Conditioning for sport (Level 2 S&C course)
    –  Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing (Senior Club Coach)
    You may be eligible for ‘reasonable adjustments’ to assist you during the course. It is important that you notify us of any specific needs at the point of booking the course so that if applicable, we can support you in applying to 1st4sport for a reasonable adjustment to assessments.

5.  Allocation of Places

Development event places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, unless otherwise stated in the course application process. You must be eligible for the development event for which you have applied.

6.  VAT

VAT is charged on all development event fees at the currently applicable rate. All costs and fees quoted include VAT.

7.  Cancellation of events

  • British Rowing reserves the right to cancel any development event due to insufficient participation/learner numbers or events outside their reasonable control. If a development event is cancelled, a full refund will be given. Participants/Learners can also choose another development event as an alternative.
  • In some circumstances, postponement of all or part of a development event may be necessary (e.g., due to adverse weather, pandemics, tutor illness etc.). In these circumstances, the development event or the relevant part will be rescheduled.

8.  Cancellation by Participant/Learner

  • In accordance with the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional charges) Regulations 2013, you can cancel your attendance at the development event within 14 days of receiving an email from British Rowing confirming your booking. In such an instance you will receive a full refund of all fees paid in respect of the development event less a £10 administrative fee. After this period, British Rowing’s refund policy in accordance with ‘Section 9’ of this document is applicable.
  • Cancellations/refunds will be in line with our ‘Refund Policy’ detailed below in section 9.
  • If you book and/or receive an email from British Rowing confirming your booking within 14 days of the start date of the development event, you agree that you are deemed to have made a request for the supply of the service to have begun. Accordingly, you agree that you no longer have the right to receive a full refund of fees paid upon cancellation of your attendance to the development event. In this circumstance British Rowing’s ‘Refund Policy’ in accordance with ‘Section 9’ of this document is applicable.

9b. Refund Policy for Level 4 Advanced Coach Qualification (in partnership with University of Gloucestershire)
  • Learners who enroll onto this qualification with the university cannot claim a refund.
  • Learners have the option to discuss the continuation of their enrollment on the course with British Rowing prior to the start of their second academic year.

10.  Your responsibilities

  • If, once you have started a development event, you fail to complete or anticipate not completing it, please contact us as soon as possible at to discuss the options that may be open to you.
    If you fail to attend any allotted assessment day/time, you will incur an additional charge. This fee is variable depending on course type and assessment type.
  • We try to ensure all face-to-face course venues are accessible to everyone. However, if you do have access requirements, please indicate this in the appropriate space in the registration form. British Rowing will endeavour to meet these requirements or advise on potential alternative development event options.
  • British Rowing expects all development event attendees and members to abide by British Rowing policies and guidance, all of which are available here.
  • British Rowing reserves the right to deny access to or remove any attendees from a development event if their behaviour is deemed unacceptable, inappropriate, violent or abusive by the development event delivery team or British Rowing. In such circumstances the attendee will not be refunded any fees paid to attend the development event.
  • The British Rowing Appeals Policy for 1st4Sport courses (Session Coach, Club Coach, Strength and Conditioning Club Coach, Senior Club Coach and Advanced Coach) course assessments can be found here.
  • You, the participant must attend all elements of the development event you signed up for in order to progress and complete the development event. If you do not attend the sessions, or do not complete elements of the development event without agreeing this with us first, then we reserve the right to remove you from the development event and no refund* will be given to you in respect of the missed sessions. In exceptional circumstances, you may be offered the opportunity to attend the missed session(s) on another development event subject to availability and our discretion. We reserve the right to require payment of any additional fees* as required for that other development event.
  • You, the participant agree that you will devote your full attention to the development event and will not engage in any other activities which may distract you from participating in full. When attending a virtual classroom, webinar or virtual coaching café, you agree that you will access the development event by the start time, from a quiet space which allows you to concentrate and that you will not engage in other activities at the same time (such as driving or answering personal emails). You acknowledge that if you do not comply with your responsibilities as set out here, that we reserve the right to exclude you from the course and no refund will be given.*
  • * In the case of coach development opportunities funded by British Rowing, we reserve the right to seek financial compensation from you to cover development event costs incurred to British Rowing.

11.  Completion (for Session Coach, Club Coach, Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Coach and Senior Club Coach)

  • All aspects of the course must be completed. This includes your assessment being completed and your paperwork submitted to British Rowing a minimum of 4 weeks before the expiry of the 1st4sport registration period (2 or 3 years depending on specific course).
  • If you are deemed ‘Not Yet Competent’ for a practical assessment, you are required to wait one month and will incur an additional charge for reassessment.

12.   For coaches aged 16-18 attending 1st4sport courses (Session Coach, Club Coach, Level 2 Strength and Conditioning)

  • You must be 16 at the time of booking. On completion of the course, if you are not yet 18, you will be given official notification as evidence of completion of the training, and then you will be certificated from your 18th birthday. The certificate will be automatically generated for you then and sent to you directly. Until you are 18, you must be supervised during all coaching activities. More guidance on the same can be found here (see on page 20 of Handbook 1).
  • Under 18s must ask a parent or guardian to complete a parental consent form at the time of booking (this will be attached to the booking email). Please ensure this is completed and returned to British Rowing as soon as possible. Please also bring a copy with you to the course. It is a requirement of your attendance on the course.

13.  Membership of British Rowing

Membership of British Rowing must be maintained throughout the duration of the course including for final assessments (Session Coach, Club Coach, Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Coach, Senior Club Coach, Advanced Coach). Note: if your membership of British Rowing ceases, you will lose access to the course resources until your membership is renewed. If this happens, you must ensure you re-join with the same membership number otherwise any course work completed will no longer be accessible.

14.  Liability

  • In respect of any liability, British Rowing’s total liability shall not exceed an aggregate of 100% of the total development event fees paid or payable by a learner/attendee under these ‘Terms and Conditions’. This in no way limits British Rowing’s liability for death or personal injury to any person due its negligence or the negligence of its employees.
  • British Rowing shall not be liable to a learner/attendee for any direct, indirect, consequential, or incidental losses; arising out of the provision of or the attendance to the development event.
  • British Rowing shall not be liable or responsible for the opinions or views expressed by the tutor/assessor or coach developer of the development event.
  • British Rowing also provides the benefit of ‘Public Liability Insurance’ and ‘Personal Accident Cover’ for certain types of membership. You can find out more about insurance benefits and applicability here.

15. Intellectual Property

  • The content of the development event is protected by copyright. You may print off one copy, and may download extracts, of any page(s) from your booked development events(s) for your personal use only.
  • The following restrictions apply to using development event content: You must not make changes to the paper or digital copies of any development event materials you have printed off or downloaded in any way.
  • You must not use any illustrations, photographs, video or audio sequences or any graphics separately from any accompanying text.
  • You must acknowledge us (and any identified contributors) as the author of content in the Development Event on any copies.
  • You must not use any part of the content in the development event for commercial purposes without obtaining our prior written consent and a licence to do so from us.
  • If you print off, copy, download or reuse any part of the development event other than as permitted under these terms, you will no longer have the right to have access to our learning resources and you must, as we request, return or destroy any copies of the materials you have made.
  • We shall have the right to use any feedback from participants on the development event and other related material, in order to improve the content and for research and teaching purposes.

16.  Force Majeure

British Rowing shall not be liable to the learner/attendee under these Terms and Conditions to the extent that it is unable to perform its obligations by events outside of British Rowing’s reasonable control including but not limited to; war, terrorist attack, government action, fire, floods, epidemic, pandemic, breakdown of systems or network access and industrial disputes.

17.  Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions shall be subject to English law in all respects (including formation) and shall be construed and interpreted in accordance with English law and shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the Courts of England.
