Obituaries and Tributes Policy

At British Rowing we want to mark the passing of members of our community with respect and care. To ensure we do this consistently and appropriately, we follow the framework below:

  • Requests from families: When families contact us, we are glad to publish obituaries on our website.
  • Exceptional tributes: In rare cases, British Rowing may write an obituary ourselves, with the support of the family. This would usually apply to former CEOs, Chairs, Olympians, or individuals who have made a significant contribution to British Rowing as an organisation (e.g. long-serving staff).
  • British Rowing Medal of Honour recipients: When a Medal of Honour winner passes away, we will reach out to the family to offer condolences and the opportunity to publish a tribute when they feel ready.
  • Annual commemoration: Obituaries are currently listed in the Almanack. We are also exploring the most appropriate way to hold an annual commemoration.

If you would like to request an obituary or discuss how someone’s contribution to rowing might be recognised, please contact [email protected]
