Chester Regatta set for a bumper weekend

The River Dee is set to host a celebration of rowing as more than 20 clubs will compete at the world’s oldest regatta this weekend. Chester Regatta will offer a full range of racing for beginners right the way through to experienced racers across a variety of distances up and down stream.

On Saturday, all eyes will be on the Open and Women’s single sculls, competing for Championship of the Dee Trophy and the City of Chester Challenge Cup respectively.  The Open J18 doubles is set to be a cracking contest as 10 crews will compete in knockout racing from 14:41 until a winner is crowned just over an hour later. Speaking of doubles, make sure you’re down at the riverbank nice and early for one of the first events of the day. The women’s doubles will be have its final at 10:10 but before then, the very best of Chester will take on competition from Liverpool University, York City, Agecroft, Bangor University, and Trafford. It’s not one to be missed.

Ahead of racing, we caught up with Adele Munday to hear more about this year’s event.

The Scottish Rowing Championships are back and 664 competitors will race over two days, making it the largest championship entry in at least five years. Since 2022, entries in the masters category have nearly doubled demonstrating the strength and growth of the sport in Scotland and beyond.

This year, the Scottish crews will also be joined by 15 clubs making the trip north of the border as well as Athlone Boat Club, Carlow Rowing Club and Lee Valley Rowing Club from Ireland. In a first for the Championships,  Orlando City Boat Club from Florida, USA, will enter the Open J14 single.

The Scottish Championships will also serve as a selection event for this year’s Home International Regatta. The Open and Women’s single sculls and coxless pairs events are expected to deliver some of the most fiercely contested racing of the weekend. As well as Scotland vests, crews will be competing for a number of historic and newly introduced trophies including the Jo Pinder Trophy and the Amanda Cobb Trophy.
