Launching our new Safeguarding Framework, as part of enhanced British Rowing Regulations
The British Rowing Safeguarding Framework has been designed to support a safe, fair and respectful environment for everyone in rowing
We have now launched our new Safeguarding Framework, designed to support a safe, fair and respectful environment for everyone in rowing. This Framework represents a significant step forward in our approach to keeping the sport safe for all members.
From today, we as British Rowing will take responsibility for all safeguarding cases in rowing. These are cases involving harm or risk of harm to children or adults at risk. We will also take responsibility for all cases of abuse, harassment and bullying. All concerns should now be reported directly to British Rowing for an initial triage process.
New Safeguarding Regulations are now effective and replace the previous safeguarding provisions within the British Rowing Regulations 2018. Hear from Danny Williams, our Director of Culture and Integrity about what this framework means and what might be changing in your area of the sport.
Key changes under our new safeguarding framework
A new centralised national reporting system
We have introduced a centralised national reporting system, bringing all safeguarding and misconduct concerns into a single, consistent process. Whether a concern relates to a child, a vulnerable adult or a misconduct matter involving someone over 18, it should now be submitted to one place, whether raised by a club or an individual.
Clear expectations for clubs
We have set out new expectations for what clubs are expected to manage internally. These are the day-to-day matters that arise in the running of a club, such as disputes over crew selection, training arrangements, squad organisation, allocation of equipment, disagreements between committee members and minor interpersonal conflicts.
Club and Regional Dispute Resolution Procedure
Our new Club and Regional Dispute Resolution Procedure is now live, providing a consistent process and clear minimum standards for dealing with club disputes, while making clear which matters must be referred to British Rowing.
Clubs are now required to formally record all club-level matters, including how issues are resolved and the outcome reached. A template to support your club is available here.
Coach registration
Clubs will now be required to provide a full and accurate list of all coaches operating within the club, and to ensure those coaches hold an active British Rowing Coach Membership.
Together, we will ensure that our response to safeguarding and conduct issues in rowing is proportionate, caring, and supportive.
