Toughest 2013 test yet for GB Rowing Team

The GB Rowing Team fly to Switzerland this morning in preparation for the third and final round of the Samsung World Rowing Cup there this weekend (12-14th).

After Sydney (March) and Eton Dorney (June), GB is on top of the points table but the team knows that the going will now be tougher with 650 rowers from 43 nations taking part on the famous Rotsee – the biggest of the three events to date.

“Lucerne will be our toughest test in this post Olympic season with a strong entry and World Championship selection at stake. It’s a great chance for our rowers to step up again after a solid season so far”, said GB Rowing Team
Perforrmance Director Sir David Tanner.

Olympic champions Alex Gregory, Pete Reed and Andrew Triggs Hodge headline the leading of two GB men’s eights entered for Lucerne. They arrive in Lucerne fresh from their win at Henley Royal Regatta in a crew with two changes since Dorney. George Nash returns post-University exams whilst Gregory is back to full fitness after a virus sidelined him in June.

All three Dorney medal-winning crews feature in this event with the Netherlands, USA and Germany entering the fray – the latter being Olympic champions.

GB’s women also get a chance to race an eight internationally for the first time since Sydney in the 6-lane Olympic format.

“I’m really looking forward to racing in the eight at Lucerne. It’s a real chance for us to get some international racing before the Worlds. There is a real sense of excitement and energy in the women’s squad at the moment”, said
Beth Rodford from the crew.

The women’s pair of Olympic champion Helen Glover and Polly Swann as well as the double scull of Frances Houghton and Vicky Meyer Laker are world cup leaders currently. Vicky Thornley races the women’s single.

The women’s and men’s quads have both been tweaked since last month’s team announcement. Graeme Thomas has been out of the boat with lllness and whilst now recovered will travel to Lucerne as a reserve. He is replaced by Jonathan Walton who has now been withdrawn from the single scull event, whilst Caragh McMurtry is also poorly and will be replaced by Lucinda Gooderham.

Gooderham, from Norfolk but born in Bury St Edmunds, was a world U23 finalist in 2005 but then concentrated on her career before returning to rowing recently. She got the call up to the team overnight.

Alan Campbell knows he will have a long and tough weekend with the top four in the Dorney final racing again in a starting field of 24 boats – the biggest of the whole regatta. Bill Lucas and Matt Langridge race the double scull.

Britain does not race the men’s pair (21 entries) but has a four of Nathaniel Reilly O’Donnell, Scott Durant, Mat Tarrant and Alan Sinclair which is growing in confidence as the season continues.

Scott’s brother Mason is in the GB men’s development eight which is stroked by Lance Tredell and coxed by Henry Fieldman.

Continuing the sibling theme brothers Richard and Peter Chambers race in the lightweight men’s double scull with the other lightweight boats largely unchanged since Dorney.

Racing at Lucerne starts with heats and some repechages on Friday 12th, with semi-finals and more repechages plus finals of the international class events on Saturday followed by a full programme of A & B finals on the Sunday.

The event will be televised in the UK by BBC TV Sport – live on the Red Button on Sunday 12th from 12.30 and on the website before then and a highlights programme on Monday 13th from 15.00 for 90 minutes.
