GB crews into eight ‘A’ finals at Euros

The GB Rowing Team will have eight of its nine crews racing in the ‘A’ finals of the European Championships on Sunday after a good second day of competition in Italy.

GB crews won three repechages to reach the final six in the men’s and women’s pairs and the lightweight men’s four while the lightweight men’s double scull won their semi-final today.

Single sculler Graeme Thomas finished third in his semi-final and the men’s eight came fourth in their repechage in good racing conditions to ensure both crews join the lightweight women’s double scull and the women’s eight in Sunday’s medal races.

The GB men’s quadruple scull came fourth in their semi-final, narrowly missing out on a place in the top six and will contest the B final.

The Championships feature crews from 36 countries, including a number of rowers who featured at London 2012, and has been used by the lottery-funded GB team as a means of giving first-class experience to young and upcoming rowers.

“I’m very pleased with all the crews today, they all stepped up from yesterday’s racing and we are looking forward to the finals tomorrow and another step up,” said Team Manager and Lead Coach Pete Sheppard.

Olivia Carnegie-Brown and Caragh McMurtry enjoyed a relatively comfortable win in the repechage of the women’s pair ahead of Ukraine and Turkey while 2012 World U23 Champions Kieren Emery from Newcastle and Shepperton’s Matthew Tarrant made their move in the last 250m of the men’s pair repechage to come past Poland and win in a rousing finish.

The lightweight men’s four made it three out of three wins for GB in the morning’s racing when Sam Scrimgeour and Adam Freeman-Pask from Imperial College Boat Club and crew-mates William Fletcher from Chester Le Street and Henley’s Jonathan Clegg edged clear of the pack from halfway and went on to win their repechage ahead of Poland and Germany.

In the men’s lightweight double scull Chris Boddy and Michael Mottram gave the British fans more to cheer when they held off France and rowed through Ukraine in the final 500m to win their semi-final.

The GB men’s quadruple scull had also reached the last 12 and in their semi-final traded places with Russia all the way down the 2km course vying for the third qualifying place in the final, eventually just missing out in fourth.

Graeme Thomas from the START programme at Agecroft Rowing Club in Manchester made his move in the closing stages of his men’s single scull semi-final to pull away from Switzerland and secure third place and a spot in the A final behind the Belgian winner and Bulgaria in second.

And in the final race of the day the GB men’s eight came through a tense and close repechage, reaching the A final with a fourth-placed finish ahead of Russia and almost catching early leaders Romania on the line.

On Sunday racing in the ‘A’ finals starts at 9:47 am BST. Go to www. worldrowing.com for the full start list.
