GB Rowing Team confirms GB men’s crews for World Junior Championships

The GB Rowing Team has today confirmed its junior men’s crews for the 2011 World Junior Championships which will take place on the Olympic course at Eton Dorney from August 3-7.

The 26 rowers in six crews who have been announced today join the eight women who were selected  to race the women’s four and quadruple scull some weeks ago.

All of these young rowers will now get the chance to compete at the Olympic venue a year before their heroes and heroines race on the same course at the 2012 Games.

They follow in the footsteps of the 2010 World junior team who came back with a men’s four silver and a women’s eight gold.

Team manager John Layng said the crews have been “gelling together very well” on “some really good water” at their recent training camp.

“I think all the crews are looking forward to being part of the warm-up to the Olympic experience,” said Layng. “When we have spoken to them about racing at Dorney it is always in light of it as the Olympic test event.

“There are a number of younger athletes who will all be available again next year so the squad itself does contain some development rowers who have at least another year at junior level.”

Chairman of the WRJC, Ben Hunt-Davis, who won gold for GB at the 2000 Olympics in the men’s eight, said nearly 1,000 athletes and officials from 46 countries have confirmed their attendance at the WRJC and are being accommodated at and around the venue.

“It is shaping up really well,” he said. “We’re going to have spectators on both sides of the lake so there should be a stadium-like atmosphere.

The championships are rowing’s official test event for the London Olympics, with the Eton Dorney Lake venue being put through its paces and assessed by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The senior GB Rowing Team, sponsored by Siemens and Lottery funded, named its crews last week for the World Championships in Bled, Slovenia, at the end of August – which double as qualifying for London 2012.

They have now headed off on a series of tough, summer training camps ahead of the event in Slovenia while the Junior GB crews test out the  race facilities at the Olympic rowing venue.
