GB Team Named for Youth Olympic Games

Beijing Olympian Tom Daley heads a 40-strong Great Britain team from 16 Olympic sports for next month’s first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

A total of 3,600 youngsters aged 14-18 from 205 National Olympic Committees will compete between 14-26 August who will take part in a schedule which includes all 26 sports on the London 2012 Olympic programme.

Named on the team for rowing are athletes Caspar Jopling, Ed Nainby-Luxmoore, Fiona Gammond and Georgia Howard-Merrill.

Team GB Youth Olympic Games chef de mission Jan Paterson said it was a huge privilege to take a talented group of young athletes to the inaugural games.

“I’m confident that we will see some exciting performances and the athletes will display skill, determination and pride to achieve their personal best for Team GB in Singapore,” she added.

The athletes will be joined in Singapore by 1,450 officials, 1,500 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 370,000 spectators.

The International Olympic Committee hopes the competition will inspire young people around the the world to participate in sport and to embrace the Olympic values.
