Bronze and brace of top five finishes

Alice Freeman followed up her world championships bronze from earlier this month with a second senior bronze today – this time at the European Championships on Lake Malta in Poznan, Poland, again in the women’s eight.

Britain also collected a brace of top five places with the lightweight women’s double scull placing fourth and the men’s eight taking fifth place in their finals. The lightweight men’s double scull were seventh.

The European Championships have been reinstated this season for the first time since 1973 when they were held in  Moscow and they have offered another competitive racing opportunity for emerging British rowers.

Freeman competed in an eight in Poznan which also included senior internationals Vicki Etiebet, Rebecca Rowe and Vicky Myers in a combination that was coxed by Rebecca Dowbiggin.

The British crew were only a second down on second-placed Germany at the 500m mark. Romania led the race from the buzzer to the line to take gold with Germany in second and Britain holding off Belarus to take bronze.
