Munich provides next World Cup Test for GB

GB Rowing today named 35 rowers in 16 boats to contest the BearingPoint World Cup in Munich, Germany, this weekend (17-19 June).

The British team, whose leadsponsor is Camelot, travels to  Munich as winners of two golds and four bronzes late last month at the first World Cup of the season at Eton.

However, the opposition in Munich will include Italy for the first time this season as well as New Zealand in a field of 551 athletes from 36 countries.

In the women’s quadruple scull the Camelot-sponsored British gold-medal line-up from Eton will take on two German crews. Germany have been winners of this event at every Olympic Games of recent memory.

The young British men’s quadruple scull has been strengthened since Eton by the addition of Matthew Wells who is back from a winter-season dogged by recovery from a back injury.

Alex Gregory, who has come into the senior squad this season from the World Class Start scheme, moves to an all-U23 double scull with Colin Smith of Oxford.

Elise Laverick, winner of a bronze medal in Athens with Sarah Winckless, continues her return to full fitness in a double with Annie Vernon – also a graduate of Sport England’s World Class Start scheme.

The men’s four, also sponsored by Camelot and winners of a gold medal at Eton, will face crews from nine other nations, including two potentially fast Italian crews and three crews from Germany in the 13-boat field.

After last week’s seat racing  the men’s lightweight four will consist of Mike Hennessy, Dave Currie, Nick English and Simon Jones. There will also be two lightweight men’s pairs.

Mark Hunter and James Lindsay-Fynn feature in the men’s Olympic class double scull with Helen Casey and Jo Hammond as their female counterparts.

The GB squad will not include either of the eights which won bronze medals at Eton and then raced at Versailles ten days ago.

"With a smaller team, we will not be expecting to equal our medal tally of Eton", said GB Rowing’s International Manager David Tanner.

"However, we know that the event will offer a good test for our leading crews in the lead-up to the World Championships in Japan in August".
