Latymer Upper School – Assistant Boathouse Manager & Lead Year 10 Coach (Boys or Girls)

The role of the Assistant Boathouse Manager is to support the Boathouse Manager in all matters relating to the Boat Club. The role involves coaching across the club, while taking direct responsibility for the performance and progression of either the Year 10 Girls or Boys Squad.

With a long tradition of boys’ rowing, since turning co-ed, the school has rapidly built a strong and robust girls’ programme, delivering consistent, high-level performances in multiple boat types. Latymer Upper Boat Club (LUSBC) is now one of the most successful co-educational school boat clubs in Britain, with established sculling and sweep rowing programmes. The boat club boasts impressive participation numbers spread equally across girls and boys.

The role of the Assistant Boathouse Manager is to support the Boathouse Manager in all matters relating to the Boat Club. The role involves coaching across the club, while taking direct responsibility for the performance and progression of either the Year 10 Girls or Boys Squad.

The role will be split approximately between 20 hours working as Assistant Boathouse Manager and 20 hours working as a Rowing Coach as directed by the Head of Rowing. This may vary depending on the time of year and required needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Boathouse & Equipment
• Support the Boathouse Manager in the upkeep, repair, and refurbishment of the Boat Club fleet (boats, oars, riggers, fittings, etc.).
• Maintain coaching launches and associated equipment, ensuring engines, fuel, and safety kits are serviceable and ready for use.
• Carry out weekly checks of the Boat Club gym, completing or arranging maintenance as required.
• Assist with transport of boats, equipment, and personnel for training camps and competitions.
Ensure safety equipment (lifejackets, first aid kits, loud hailers, etc.) is regularly serviced and available for use.
• Contribute to long-term maintenance planning, particularly during the summer refurbishment period.

Coaching & Athlete Development

• Lead the coaching for either the Year 10 Boys’ or Girls’ Squad, taking responsibility for their training, development, and progression. Sessions that introduce pupils to rowing, build enthusiasm for the sport, and prepare them for progression onto the performance pathway from Year 10.
• Coach across other year groups and squads (Year 9–U6) as required.
• Support pupils in developing their technical, physical, and personal skills in rowing.
• Work within school safeguarding and welfare guidelines, ensuring all sessions are safe and inclusive.
• Oversee the Year 9 games programme, delivering 1–2 weekly

Operations & Programme Support

• Accompany the Boat Club to training fixtures, camps and regattas as directed
• Assist with logistics for away fixtures, UK/abroad training camps and holiday programmes
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety, safeguarding and risk assessment requirements
• Act as a role model and ambassador for the Boat Club within the school and wider rowing community
The list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. The successful candidate will be expected to take on additional duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Rowing, Director of Sport or Boathouse Manager.

Person Specification

Essential:
• Excellent understanding of the principles and practice of coaching rowing with the practical experience to back that up.
• Experience and knowledge of repairing rowing related equipment.
• Attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire both pupils and colleagues alike.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Determination to get the best out of every individual (pupil, staff, parent).
• The vision to initiate new ideas and the skills to implement them.
• Excellent organisational abilities.
• Evident passion for the sport.
• An understanding of the place of rowing within the context of an academic school day school.

Desirable:
• Current or recent experience of coaching within a successful school programme.
• Tideway knowledge and experience.
• UKCC L2, L2 S&C, RYA L2 Powerboating.
• Possession of the appropriate driving licence for towing and experience of towing would be a benefit; D1 or B + E category on licence.
• Proficiency in basic maintenance of everyday rowing equipment.
