Matt Rossiter profile image

Matt Rossiter enjoyed a highly successful junior and U23 international rowing career, but suffered a major back injury in 2011 which took two patient years to recover from.

He made a convincing return to the sport, joining Leander Club in Henley-on-Thames and winning the Ladies’ Challenge Plate at Henley Royal Regatta in 2016.

Matt started rowing at Abingdon School in 2004, and quickly showed his talent by earning selection for the M4- that won gold at the 2007 World Rowing Junior Championships in Beijing.

Immersing himself in rowing whilst at Durham University, Matt raced in the U23 eight in Brandenburg in 2008, finishing fifth, and won a bronze medal in the same boat the following year, as well as three golds at the Sydney Youth Olympic Games. He concluded his U23 career in 2010 by winning a fine silver medal in the four at the World Championships.

Joining the senior squad in 2017, Rossiter performed well at Trials and went on to win gold at the first World Cup in the pair with Jacob Dawson. He moved to the four after the European Championships and won gold and silver at the second and third World Cups. At the World Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Rossiter finished third behind Australia and Italy, rowing with Will Satch, Moe Sbihi and Matthew Tarrant.

Beyond the Boat

Away from training Matt likes to relax with a good crime drama – Tom Hardy’s theatrical Taboo, along with Broadchurch and Luther are recent favourites. He also enjoys following the activities of adventurers, and lists doctor or professional explorer as possible career options after rowing.

Matt’s favourite holiday destination is Cornwall. Though he admits there are more glamorous places to visit, he says: “I love surfing and being in the sea and Cornwall has some stunning beaches and breaks. I’ve been going there with my family for 25 years.”

Matt would invite Jonny Wilkinson, David Knott and Ernest Shackleton to his dream dinner party. After racing he likes to pack away 20 McDonalds nuggets along with a massive milkshake. Not many people know that he loads his toast with butter, marmite and ketchup: “delicious.”

Matt is Lottery funded through UK Sport.
