When he's not rowing or finishing his research (growing stem cells into motor neurons to study ALS), James writes songs.
He has released five so far. His latest song “Love Song Lately”, debuted live on BBC One in April 2025 during the Boat Race coverage, where he raced for Oxford.
James finds music is a great way to switch off and it gives him a chance to use the creative side of his brain in a different way from rowing or academics.
He is currently finishing writing an album, and wants to continue to pursue this passion alongside his sporting ambition of racing at the LA 2028 Olympics (which he hears also has a great music scene)!
