James began rowing through the GB Start program at Gloucester Rowing Club in 2015.

Later that year, he joined Hartpury College, where he continued his GB Start career and made his first international appearance at the Munich Regatta in the Men’s Quadruple Sculls, winning bronze in 2018. Later that same year, he went on to win the Junior European Championships in the Men’s Double Sculls and pick up a silver medal in the Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the World Championships.

James joined Leander Club in 2018 and went on to come 7th in the Men’s Double Sculls at the 2019 U23 Worlds. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA, studying business and finance for his Bachelor’s and Management for his Master’s. He raced all over the United States, and in his final year was elected team captain. During this time, James represented Great Britain in the Men’s Double Sculls, coming 4th at the 2021 U23 Worlds, and 7th in the Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the 2022 U23 Worlds. During COVID, he returned to the UK to win the Prince of Wales in 2021 with Leander Club.

Most recently, James has returned from the United States and joined the Senior GB team. He is looking forward to making his senior debut.
