Cameron (Cam) Buchan
Rower // Beach Sprints
Club: St Andrews University Boat Club
Hometown: Dunipace, Scotland

Cam Buchan didn’t begin his sporting life with an oar in hand—in fact, he grew up chasing basketball dreams. After representing Great Britain at U20 level, he moved to the USA at age 17 to play basketball at Kent School in Connecticut. Little did he know the school was a rowing powerhouse.
After months of persuasion from the head rowing coach, Cam gave it a go in his spring semester—and never looked back. His natural ability and work ethic quickly earned him a rowing scholarship to Northeastern University in Boston, where he trained and raced at one of the top collegiate programs in the country.
Cam’s time at Northeastern University was full of defining moments that shaped him into the athlete and person he is today. But one that stands out above the rest came in his third year, when his underdog crew finished second at the Eastern Sprints. Crossing the line that day wasn’t just about the result—it was the culmination of belief, hard work, and complete trust in the crew around him. It was a powerful lesson in how a team can become greater than the sum of its parts, and it’s a feeling he continues to chase in every boat he sits in.
Cam’s journey hasn’t always followed a traditional path. After years of hard work, he earned a place at the GB training centre—only to be forced out due to illness. That setback became a turning point. Rather than stepping away from the sport, Cam doubled down. He started studying his own physiology, writing his own training program, and forging his own route back through rowing. He built a successful coaching business and developed a strong online presence, running multiple social media channels to share his knowledge and experience.
Cam is passionate about making rowing more accessible. He has seen how young people from less privileged backgrounds are often excluded from the sport, and he uses his platform to break down the stereotype that rowing is only for the elite. Through YouTube and Instagram, he shares what the sport can offer anyone—on and off the water. Whether it’s resilience, discipline, or teamwork, he believes rowing teaches lessons that last far beyond a racing career.
Competing for Great Britain is something Cam doesn’t take lightly. While there’s weight in the legacy and expectations, he chooses to focus on the process rather than the pressure. For him, it’s about the journey—showing up every day, staying consistent, and finding joy in the work. That mindset is what keeps him motivated through both the tough sessions and the biggest wins.
Cam is known not just for his athleticism, but for his transparency and willingness to share the full picture. On YouTube and Instagram, he documents the reality of being an elite athlete—celebrating the wins, but also showing the setbacks, the uncertainty, and the daily grind most people don’t see. He hopes to show that success isn’t linear, and that failure is often just part of progress. Away from rowing, Cam finds balance and inspiration in the Scottish outdoors—he’s slowly ticking off the Munros whenever time allows.
A keen musician, he plays both the violin and saxophone, and brings a creative eye to his photography and videography. Whether in training, coaching, or content, Cam leads with the belief that showing up as your full self is what inspires others to do the same.
