We’re Across The Line! Join us to look back on a glorious weekend of racing across the UK.
Second trip of the year to the Tyne
For the second time in three weeks, the ever-reliable River Tyne hosted the crews from across the region. Much like Tyne United New Year’s Head, Durham University BC’s men’s squad were largely unchallenged, putting three Eights into the top four of division 1. In their home race, Tyne ARC placed third overall, nine seconds behind the Palatinate second Eight as they look to lift the Jackson Trophy at the Head of the River Race for the first time since 2019.
Across the division, it was a good morning’s racing for York City RC. The club won the Women’s J18 Quadruple Sculls alongside the Open J18 Double Sculls. However, the fastest double of the morning came from Cambois RC. Their J16s were outstanding, winning their category by 56 seconds and beating several crews in the process. Not to be outdone, the students of the University of York BC would pick up the Open Band 2 Eights title.
As is so often the case, the Durham University Colleges made the short trip north from their bases on the Wear. Trevelyan College BC stepped up to Open Band 1 Eights and were the quickest College Crew of the division, putting the best part of a minute into St John’s College BC. That being said, neither crew could get past Queen Elizabeth High School BC, who won the Open J18 event.
The success would continue in the second division for York City RC. Eyes are immediately drawn to the top end of the results sheet, where their victorious Open Band 1 Coxless Fours can be found. Despite racing time only, their Open J18 Quadruple Scull put 40s into category winners, Infinity BC, and their J18 women continued their golden day, winning the J18 Doubles.
The women of Tyne ARC would take the ultimate bragging rights though. Stroked by former Newcastle University BC Captain, Frances Russell, the Tyne women were the only crew under the 17-minute barrier, beating the closest boat by 18 seconds. There was further success for the local women. The students of Northumbria University BC won the Open Coxless Fours which added to their win in the Women’s Quadruple Sculls from the morning.
Durham ARC would conquer all in the Women’s Band 2 Eights, 17 seconds quicker than a composite from Rob Roy BC and St Neots RC who won the Band 3 event.

University of Bristol BC top both divisions at University of Plymouth Head
The men of the University of Bristol BC had a grand day out at the races, placing first and second in Open Eights, before repeating the same feat in the Coxed Fours. Their women also had a superb day’s racing on the River Dart, winning the Women’s Novice Eight, Coxed Four, and the Women’s Eight in division two.
At their own event, the University of Plymouth BC struck gold in the Open Novice Coxed Quad, beating Bournemouth University BC by just one second.
Dart Totnes ARC, the landlords of the Plymouth students, had four wins while the winner of the Open Single Scull was Greenbank Falmouth RC’s Tim Wilkinson.
