Head of Rowing – RGS Worcester
The RGS Worcester are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and inspirational individual to lead the coaching, development and administration of Rowing. This is an exciting opportunity to join their coaching team and build on recent sporting successes.
Key Responsibilities
- Run the School’s Rowing programme and ensure there is high-quality and safe coaching at all levels.
- Lead and manage the coaching team to ensure there are clear expectations of roles, and in the planning and delivery of training.
- Mentor coaching staff and assistants, ensuring they receive appropriate training and
hold/maintain qualifications in. Rowing and other relevant areas (e.g. First Aid,
minibus/trailer driving). - Direct the RGS Rowing Pathway, setting clear goals of excellence and achievements for all pupils.
- Manage the fleet, boat house equipment, motor launches and trailers (in conjunction
with the Boat House Manager and Estates/Maintenance staff). - Chair coaches’ meetings to ensure the performance of athletes is reviewed and all
logistics are carried out smoothly and efficiently. - Work with the PE department staff to ensure complementary support and training for
pupils, such as S&C and mentoring, are appropriate. - Work with HR department / Director of Sport to manage the recruitment and selection of new rowing staff members as and when required.
- Complete appraisals for Rowing Staff and conduct return to work interviews as necessary.
- Attend, as required, meetings (e.g. calendar/sports committee) and represent RGS at the Worcester River Sport Association and other groups.
- Attend School Open Days to promote Rowing to prospective pupils and organise rowing information evenings and taster sessions.
- Co-ordinate several School Rowing events, such as the annual Rowing Awards Evening, the End-of-Season regatta, the annual J15 trip to Henley Royal Regatta.
Coaching and Development
- Promote excellence in coaching and learning to ensure that all pupils can achieve their potential in Rowing.
- As the lead Rowing professional, set personal targets and take responsibility for your own continuous professional development.
- Set a high standard of skills in coaching and ensure that good practice is consistently shared
- Identify training needs within Rowing and ensure they are appropriately met. Encourage all coaching staff to be proactive in their own continuous professional development.
- Monitor the progress, performance and techniques of all athletes to ensure that Rowing is safe. and high levels of technical ability are achieved and maintained.
- Ensure that the progress of individual athletes is regularly assessed, recorded and reported to inform future coaching needs.
- Keep informed of the latest developments in Rowing and Sports Science relating to young athletes to ensure best practice is adopted.
- Work with the regional Team Manager and National Selectors on athlete development and selection.
- Work with the School’s Athlete Development Programme (ADP) to ensure elite rowers receive appropriate mentoring and support.
- Work with the Director of Sport to identify, assess and recruit sports scholarship applicants.
- Promote the values of clean sport, fair play, teamwork, healthy competition and respect for officials and British Rowing rules.
- Ensure effective communication with rowers and parents regarding team selection and athlete development.
Management of Resources
- Manage the Rowing budget and purchasing of equipment in consultation with the Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) and the Director of Sport.
- Identify future resourcing needs for consideration within the school budgeting and planning process.
- Monitor and review the Boat Plan regularly.
- Oversee the annual Boat House inventory , in consultation with the Boat House Manager and Estates Team, and ensure all equipment is well cared for and meets all health and safety requirements.
- Work with kit suppliers and the Director of Sport / Assistant Head (Co-Curricular) to provide specialist rowing kit that complies with RGS branding guidelines.
- Attend meetings and the AGM of the Pullinger Club (parents’ and friends’ association) and work with the Pullinger Club on fundraising activities.
Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Protection
-  Ensure compliance with the School’s Health and Safety policy, regularly conducting and updating risk assessments in consultation with the Director of Sport and the School’s Health & Safety Officer.
- Ensure that RGS Worcester Boat Club complies with British Rowing guidelines as outlined in Row Safe.
- Conduct and submit the annual British Rowing Safety Audit.
- Ensure British Rowing incident reports are submitted and reviewed, as required.
- Work with British Rowing Safety Advisors and other water sports clubs on the River Severn to promote safe Rowing.
- Ensure that all coaching is delivered with regard to school policies and British Rowing’s Safeguarding and Protection guidelines.
