Latymer Upper School – Assistant Head of Rowing & Lead Year 10 Boys or Girls Coach

The Assistant Head of Rowing will work closely with the Head of Rowing to support the overall leadership and development of the Boat Club. The role involves coaching across the club, while taking direct responsibility for the performance and progression of either the Year 10 Girls or Boys Squad.

With a long tradition of boys’ rowing, since turning co-ed, the school has rapidly built a strong and robust girls’ programme, delivering consistent, high-level performances in multiple boat types. Latymer Upper Boat Club (LUSBC) is now one of the most successful co-educational school boat clubs in Britain, with established sculling and sweep rowing programmes. The boat club boasts impressive participation numbers spread equally across girls and boys.
The Assistant Head of Rowing will work closely with the Head of Rowing to support the overall leadership and development of the Boat Club. The role involves coaching across the club, while taking direct responsibility for the performance and progression of either the Year 10 Girls or Boys Squad.
Working under the direction of the Head of Rowing, the Assistant Head will contribute to the effective management of the Boat Club and will play an active role in administration, race entries, and maintaining strong relationships with athletes, parents, staff, and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

(Leadership & Coaching)

  • Support the Head of Rowing with the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the rowing programme.
  • Lead the coaching for either the Year 10 Boys’ or Girls’ Squad, taking responsibility for their training, development, and progression.
  • Oversee the Year 9 games Line manage and mentor assistant and volunteer coaches, supporting their professional development and ensuring a consistent coaching philosophy across squads.
  • Act as an ambassador for the School and Boat Club, maintaining strong relationships programme, delivering 1–2 weekly sessions that introduce pupils to rowing, build enthusiasm for the sport, and prepare them for progression onto the performance pathway from Year 10.
  • Develop pupils’ technical, physical, and personal skills, fostering excellence and enjoyment in rowing with pupils, parents, staff, alumni, and the wider rowing community.
  • Contribute to the long-term strategic development of the Boat Club, including future facilities, equipment, and squad expansion.
  • Ensure all rowing activities uphold the highest standards of safety, safeguarding, and welfare in line with British Rowing and school policies.

Operational Responsibilities (Programme Management & Delivery)

  • Assist in planning and delivering the rowing calendar, including regattas, fixtures, and training camps (UK and abroad).
  • Oversee the smooth running of day-to-day operations in collaboration with the Boathouse Manager, Sports Centre staff, and Sports Administrators.
  • Support the administration of essential tasks, including: British Rowing memberships, affiliations, and entries
  • Transport, catering, and accommodation for training and competition
  • Equipment, kit orders, and maintenance
  • Lead the parent meetings and assist organising club events
  • Lead weekly planning meetings with squad coaches and support staff to coordinate training and competition.
  • Monitor compliance with Health & Safety, safeguarding procedures, and risk assessments.
  • Undertake additional duties as required by the Head of Rowing or Director of Sport, adapting the role to the evolving needs of the Boat Club.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Excellent understanding of the principles and practice of coaching rowing with the practical experience to back that up.
  • Experience and knowledge of the administrative elements of a boat club.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire both pupils and colleagues alike.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Determination to get the best out of every individual (pupil, staff, parent).
  • The vision to initiate new ideas and the skills to implement them.
  • Excellent organisational abilities.
  • Evident passion for the sport.
  • An understanding of how a commitment to excellence at the senior end needs to be balanced with the development of the early stages, and vice versa.
  • An understanding of the place of rowing within the context of an academic school day school.

Desirable:

  • Current or recent experience of coaching within a successful school programme.
  • Tideway knowledge and experience.
  • UKCC L2, L2 S&C, RYA L2 Powerboating.
  • Possession of the appropriate driving licence for towing and experience of towing would be a benefit, which is a D1 or B + E category on their licence.
  • Previous line management experience
